The Truth:  Miscellaneous

Fight AIDS By Doing Absolutely Nothing… With Britney Bernstein

By Britney Bernstein

You’re sitting on your ass already, so why not raise some money for a good cause? If you don’t give a shit about “good causes” you can use this opportunity to take money away from Microsoft. I’ll admit it; it’s a bit of both for me.

I don’t know many people who use MSN Messenger very often these days, including myself, but I’m back as of tomorrow and you and I should chat. But, for the next 30 days, I’ll be sacrificing myself for the greater good by making my MSN Messenger contact information public.

No, I don’t want to be your friend. I don’t even care about what you have to say. Well, unless you want to say how awesome the new Disney Channel Original Movie, Camp Rock is, and how you want to host a sing-along at your awesome pool house.

Midnight tonight marks the beginning of the “i’m talkathon: 30 days of e-mailing and IMing for the common good.”

The “i’m Initiative” has raised more than $1.5 million dollars since March ’07 for their partner causes.

Here’s the best part:

“Exactly how much will we share with our partner causes? Well, that’s up to you and the growing masses of registered i’m Initiative users. The more messages you send, the more we give.”

Partner causes include:
American Red Cross
Boys & Girls Clubs of America
National AIDS Fund
The Humane Society of the United States
ninemillion.org
National Multiple Sclerosis Society
Sierra Club
UNICEF
stopglobalwarming.org
Susan G. Komen for the Cure

Don’t forget to designate your cause when you sign in and add britneybernstein@hotmail.com to your contact list. Make new friends, connect with old ones, and use it as a reason to ask your ex about his new ugly girlfriend.

I’ll be chatting for the National AIDS Fund.
Maybe next time we can all chat for the Buy Britney a Scooter Fund ($3,500 donations are welcome)…

yanno, it wouldn’t be bad at all if they werent making more off of this than they’ll be donating.

“i’m is an initiative from Microsoft. Every time you use Windows Live™ Messenger or Windows Live Hotmail®, our free webmail service, Microsoft shares a portion of the program’s advertising revenue with an organization of your choice from a selection of some of the world’s most effective organizations dedicated to social causes. We’ve set no cap on the amount we’ll donate to each organization. The sky’s the limit. And it’s free.

i’m is about making a difference. Not in a huge expensive way, not in a time-consuming way. But in a simple, effective way.

You won’t have to change your conversation to change the conversation. With every e-mail and instant message, you help address an issue you feel passionate about, including poverty, child protection, disease, environmental degradation and animal protection. Just join and start talking, and we’ll start giving.”

If they really wanted to help, they’d just offer up a portion of their ad revenue without a consumer commitment to M$ products. Sorry, but fuck this kind of back handed consumerism, and especially hiding it under the guise of charity.

WTF? Is this really the place for this?

  3. darkmethod says:

the comment box of an article about a PR stunt being marketed as charity, yeah seems like the right place to comment about how it would be better for everyone to do something genuine if they feel so inclined, rather than line the pockets of a bunch of profiteering frauds.I went to the website intending to join in, but when I read the fine print it turned out to be a load of BS, why wouldnt I comment?

  4. Joseph Rose says:

No… I mean, is this site really the place for this “article”?

this is a great cause. why am i doing this?

well lets see. I’m here to raise money for social causes thanks to Microsoft and the “I’m initiative” so for the next 30 days i will be instant messaging and sending emails for a cause. It’s a Microsoft program that gives to a social cause every time you use Windows Live Messenger or Windows Live Hotmail. I saw an ad that said, “The more you talk, the more we give.

” So I thought, if I get a bunch of people talking for 30 days, how much will they give?

  7. I slept with a man who has AIDS. I was not aware at the time. I fell in love with him, but I am not with him. I am scared for myself. I have a 16 year old son who I think the world of. I am with a man I have been with for 14 years. I am not in love with this man anymore. My life is very hard. I think AIDS is disgusting. Every illness is. How about getting a cure? I know there is a cure.

I don?t usually reply to posts but I will in this case. I?ve been experiencing this very same problem with a new WordPress installation of mine. I?ve spent weeks calibrating and getting it ready when all of a sudden? I cannot delete any content. It?s a workaround that, although isn?t perfect, does the trick so thanks! I really hope this problem gets solved properly asap.
