While a lot of media attention is being given to Nirvana’s 20th anniversary-edition of Nevermind, there’s another classic album turning twenty this year: U2’s Achtung Baby.

Just as Spin had several artists covering Nevermind, Q intends to have a similar compilation in tribute of Achtung Baby, although with an arguably better-looking lineup. Bono himself revealed the initial batch of covers to Rolling Stone: ”Jack White does “Love Is Blindness,” Depeche Mode do “So Cruel,” Patti Smith did “Until The End Of The World,” Damian Rice does “One.” It just goes on. And it’s strange, because when I hear the album, when U2 do it, all I hear is what’s wrong with it. But when I heard all these artists doing it, I thought, ‘It’s really good.’” Glasvegas and Coldplay are also reportedly a part of the project.

In the same piece, Bono commented on a music video that was recently made for Even Better Than The Real Thing: ”Damien Hirst made a very special art work, which has only been shown once and probably won’t be shown again, because [it was for the] Glastonbury festival and it’s an extraordinary work of art”. Indeed, the video acted as a background during the band’s performance of the song at Glastonbury – more specifically, its “Fish Out Of Water Mix,” which the band adopted as an opening song throughout 2011, and which was never officially released. Oddly enough, even though Bono mentioned that the video “won’t be shown again,” we discovered that it’s been sitting on YouTube since July, complete with a studio version of the mix:

If you’re finding the excessive exposure of insects familiar, we remind you that Damien Hirst was responsible for RHCP’s I’m With You artwork.

Also as part of the celebration, the band are obviously reissuing Achtung Baby in a ridiculously huge collector’s edition box set, but the (arguably more interesting) bit comes in the form of a documentary called From The Sky Down. Directed by Davis Guggenheim (the same man who brought us It Might Get Loud), it focuses on the recording session and touring around the release of the record. Watch the trailer:

The movie made its premier yesterday at the Toronto International Film Festival, and is set to be released in November, alongside the box set.

Today, there’s a lot of talk about copyright infringement on the ‘net. Idolator reports that two alternative music magazines in Toronto went to war last week over whether or not Greg Gillis’ music, entirely comprised of samples- hundreds per awesomely genius song- is “fair use.” Then there’s BoingBoing founder Cory Doctorow, giving a dissertation on “why he copyfights,” claiming that culture itself will cease to exist if we don’t reform intellectual property law.

We here at Antiquiet have had our fair share of trouble and then some, but there’s one thing I’m fucking certain of. The new Hilary Duff video is hands-down, without a doubt, seriously infringing the shit out of some copyrights:

I think what pisses me off the most about this is that Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic claimed a co-writing credit on the track, for the music- which is nothing more than Depeche Mode’s Personal Jesus; verse for verse, chorus for chorus. Even Hilary’s hook only changes one word from the original.

As shitty pop music goes, Hilary Duff is not as bad as most. Last year’s Dignity was possibly good enough for guilty pleasure behind closed (and soundproofed) doors. But this is as bad a track as the nature of the album it’s found on: a last minute cash-grab greatest hits compilation hitting stores today.
