Studio Reports:  Silversun Pickups

Silversun Pickups Set A Return With ‘Neck Of The Woods’

By Reverend Justito

Over the past few months Silver Lake natives Silversun Pickups have spent a lot of time clear across the city of Angels in the forests of Topanga Canyon. The result of their time up in the mountains high above the San Fernando Valley (Neil Young’s old stomping ground, the same place where our man Johnny Firecloud takes new albums on their first-listen review runs) is their third full length studio album Neck of the Woods. Recorded at the home studio of Grammy award winning producer Jackknife Lee, the album is scheduled to be released on May 8th, 2012.

Silversun Pickups frontman Brian Aubert recently spoke to Spin about the creation process of the new record. In addition to sharing how his car became “a living room studio” during the 45 minute commute from downtown adjacent to Southern California’s best known hippie reservation, Aubert shared “I have never learned about myself while making an album, but this was a really interesting experience.”

He also takes the time to mention how the band decided to avoid the strings that were so heavily featured on 2009’s Swoon, instead focusing on unconventional sounds where “…we don’t know what instrument is making what sound.” With Silversun Pickups being one of the few bright spots in a day and age of bland rock radio the past five years, it will be interesting to see what a trip to the woods has done for the Grammy nominated rockers.

The band is currently scheduled to return to the road Memorial Day Weekend when they perform at the 2012 Sasquatch Music Festival in George, WA. For those who can’t wait for new music from Silversun Pickups, check out Broken Bottles from their 2011 Record Store Day Black Friday release below:
