Open Hand Found Over The Rainbow

By Skwerl

While Black Rebel Motorcycle Club rocked the Echoplex for the first of a three night residence (we’re catching them tonight), and as Dave Grohl was making a surprise appearance with Pat Smear “and friends” following Charly Coombes of Supergrass fame’s set at the Viper Room, Antiquiet was down a path less traveled, across the street at the famous Rainbow Bar & Grill to catch a rare, long-awaited performance by a band called Open Hand.

Had we convinced all of you to join us, we may have wound up regretting it. Aside from the worthy competition for attention, we have to be perfectly honest and admit that the Rainbow is a bit less than the most practical of music venues, and neither the sound system nor the room acoustics did the subtleties of the seven piece performance much justice to speak of.

With that said, while it wouldn’t have been a good first impression for new fans, we couldn’t have been more thrilled to see this band back in action. They formed in 1999, released a few EPs, and then dropped an amazing album through Trustkill, 2005′s You And Me. And then they dropped off the face of the fucking earth.

Check out Her Song, the second track from You And Me:

We’ve been on the lookout for this band ever since that disappearance, and were even trying to get them to play our Rock For Justice benefit show last year after hearing in April that they were wrapping up a new album entitled Honey. That album is now set for a release in April, and two songs from it can be heard on Open Hand’s MySpace.

Having heard the rough demos for “Honey” I must say I wish I could have made this show last night. What a great band, is Matt Talbott from Hum still working with them?

Likewise, since you mentioned it, whose got my miracle for the Echoplex tonight now that the Amoeba gig is off?

Nothing worse than a guest-list cut. That’s some serious BS right there.

Skwerl you amaze me with your taste in music. I have The Dream and You And Me but I havent been able to get my hands on Jammin’ on the Breaks and The Later Stages of Now. I’ve waited 5 years for this new album, I know it will rock!

FYI, Open Hand just posted Honey in it’s entirety on myspace. You can listen to everything and purchase from the player if you choose to do so.
