Ultra Beatdown Delivers A Semi-Ultra Beatdown

By Tedward, July 24th, 2008

Ultra Beatdown, the upcoming fourth release from those speed freaks known as DragonForce, delivers the goods. I’m not going to sit here and pretend that this album deserves a place next to the likes of South Of Heaven, or Vulgar Display Of Power, but if you like DragonForce (fast rifts, cheezy inaudible lyrics, and video game noises), you’ll love this album.

I understand DragonForce’s lyrics are downright abysmal. They are the lyrical equivalent of Taco Bell: throw in a little fire here, maybe some steel here, possibly a dark winter (moonlight?) there and wrap it up in a cheese-dick story of some knight’s army racing towards salvation… and you have the basic formula of a DragonForce song. Having said that, ZP Theart’s voice has never sounded more angelic. He carries the notes and sells the emotional journey that unfolds over the course of the record. Also, DragonForce has apparently bought a proper mic with their Activision checks. Word on the street is that the previous records were recorded using this:

Ultra Beatdown is Frederic Leclercq’s debut with the band. Leclercq, of Maladaptive semi-fame, accents Totman and Li’s whailing axes very nicely. I anticipate he will take the band to the next level. Herman Li does what Herman Li does best: he rips the guitar a new asshole, and leaves your ears bleeding. While there is an eerie lack of trademark pull-offs and hammer-ons, nevertheless there is something for every metalhead in this record- whether you like speed, 80s style ballads, or melodies chock full of power chords.

Once again, DragonForce has pushed the limits of speed power metal in what has become commonplace with their studio albums. While Herman Li has expressed that they will not claim this album is “faster and heavier,” I contend that it is right up their with any of their gut-wretching, adrenaline fueled tracks in their previous albums. Here’s a preview, The Last Journey Home:

If this is what an Ultra Beatdown is like, you can kick my ass any day.

About Tedward

Tedward is a guy Skwerl works with. When he first hit the scene, Skwerl and his friends referred to him as "normal guy" behind his back. But after a few months, they discovered that he was just as crazy as everyone else Skwerl associates with.
One day he said he wanted to write a review of the DragonForce album for Antiquiet. We said Okay.

I hate joke bands. Its an insult to the deep history of rock n roll (and heavy metal). DragonForce is a joke band whether their fans know it or not.

  2. Josh said:

Dude this album was horrible. They sounded like The Spice Girls with guitars.

  3. AZB said:

A friend of mine played a trick on me once with this band. Told me they were good, had me pull up a video of theirs while I was on the phone with him, and then laughed at me while I sat through 25 guitar solos.

I hate to say that the first commenter is right. This band is nothing more than the resurrected corpse of pre-hair 80s metal, repackaged in a plastic-guitar-controller-friendly box.

Talent alone does not make good art.

    Blows.

Man I love how everyone talks so bad about Dragonforce. Whether or not you like their music, the band has more talent in Herman Li alone than Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Underoath, Slipknot, and any other metal band you can think of combined.

  6. Daniel said:

DragonForce rocks hand down, lets see any of you come CLOSE to do what they do PLUS sound that Epic.
And I don`t know what you mean by not understanding the voice, does your sound system suck or something? I can everything clearly and I sing along.
Dragonforce is the best Metal and Power Metal band ever, period.
Prove me wrong. Oh wait, you can`t play that fast, hard, write nor even pretend to do any of that can ya?
A King loves this and so do I.

  7. AZB said:

    @Joe Hensley:
Hmm. I suppose the difference between the guitarist from Dragonforce and the guitarists from the bands you mentioned is that at least those bands made (arguable) worthwhile contributions to the art form whereas all Dragonforce contributes is *perfected* wankery. I suppose its whatever rocks your boat and all, but I can’t really recall the last time I listened to a band just because their guitarist was highly talented. With that mentality, I suppose we should all be listening to Christina Aguilera for the sole purpose of basking in her vocal prowess.

    @Daniel:
Last time I checked, it doesn’t require an ounce of musical talent for a music enthusiast to be able to tell whether or not something is garbage wankery.

  8. Joe said:

Wow. I saw a comment recently about how everybody loves this band despite it’s being so bad. I’ve seen a lot more HATE comments at Dragonforce than anything… and, being a fan, it is beyond me why people go to forums just to hate on them.

  9. Magoichi Saika said:

Dragonforce is the epitomy of guilty pleasure. This album is the same as their last 3 albums. The same song arrangements, same crazy guitar solos, same epic vocals, same lyrics, same everything. its so boring and repetitive, but its just so good! I hate them, but i love them as well. ill be seeing them live when they play in my country in October thats for sure.

  10. UR mom said:

df’s vocals have always been amazing….but if u want to hear a shit band…type it in on google and it shud bring up metallica

  11. Eddy said:

“Oh wait, you can`t play that fast, hard, write nor even pretend to do any of that can ya?” In fact – yes, I can! I’m a guitarist and keyboardist myself. And
it’s just a common fact that Li doesn’t write most of his solos himself – Totman writes them for him. And even technically, musically AND harmonically there are way better people than Herman Li. Dream Theater – for example – kick all of DragonForce’s asses with their little fingers. Hell, John Petrucci alone would kick theirs! He and the others of Dream Theater have way more skill in songwriting, music theory, soloing etc. pp. Stating that DragonForce would be more talented than “any other metal band” is just ridiculously wrong and wrong and wrong and stupid. I’m sorry to disappoint you, but it’s the other way ’round. All that Li can do is wanking on the guitar fast (not even precisely, but however..) and he… ‘comes’ way to early. That’s not how music goes; it’s mindless but harmonic shredding!

  12. Malcheior Sveth said:

I love this band, but I can understand why everyone hates on them. I completely agree with Magoichi on this one- they really aren’t that musically talented, all their songs sound similar, but it’s just so epic you can’t help but enjoy it sometimes.

  13. emerald said:

I find this about DragonForce: if you are willing to overlook their two major flaws (poor live performances and similar-sounding songs), you will probably like them. The fact that they don’t really take themselves seriously is another positive point, and I find them entertaining to listen to. If you just mindlessly believe the bad stuff without bothering to find out how fun their albums are to listen to, then you’re worse than you make DragonForce out to be. Be open-minded.

  14. Eddy said:

“If you just mindlessly believe the bad stuff without bothering to find out how fun their albums are to listen to, then you’re worse than you make DragonForce out to be. Be open-minded.”

I don’t just mindlessly believe what any bad stuff. Totman IS the main songwriter, which means he writes the solos as well.
Telling me to be open-minded while not responding to any of the arguments shown shows how “open-minded” you are yourself.
I know that they’re not (unlike Manowar :)/DeMaio) taking themselves too seriously, and I appreciate it. I didn’t say they’re bad, I just said that they’re not the best band nor the most talented one – there is none, in fact. It’s all a matter of one’s opinion of how music should be.

  15. Diego Cortez said:

I can perfectly understand why a lot of people don’t like this band. It’s talented, it’s fairy-like and it’s incredibly epic. Of course, a lot of people feel good listening to “serious” bands, such as Metallica, Dream Theater, Megadeth, etc., and that’s all right, I guess. Whatever “rocks their boat”.

For example, I think Metallica sucks hairy balls, but if you think I’m gonna waste MY TIME on their forums, just saying how much they suck… Well, let’s say my life is not that pathetic yet.

Apparently most “serious metal” fans can’t just enjoy their music in peace and keep to themselves stupidly expressed opinions no one cares about.

  16. HUGH said:

Its as simple as this, you like Dragonforce or you dont, but just because they are not your cup of tea does not make them bad or garbage. I like them but i also listen to serious stuff such as slayer etc. As has been previously stated its down to your own taste. Why waste your time moaning about a band your not into, just dont buy their cd quite simple really.

  17. Eddy said:

“Well, let’s say my life is not that pathetic yet.”

Oh, believe me – it is! Otherwise you wouldn’t do the same as you described, just in another direction. How about trying to read without the expression of a 14-year-old. If you had done so, you would’ve proven yourself wrong, but that would’ve shown that your comment on me was dispensable and inappropriate, which was – of course – not in the (yours) “pwn!!!1″ mindset.
If I wouldn’t like their music, I wouldn’t listen to it. It’s that easy. And, my dear friend I wouldn’t rant on them sometimes If I wasn’t (positively) interested in that band. But I like the end of your comment. It’s so nicely describing the rest of it.

  18. Eddy said:

Oh, emm – And I really would like to know the time I said they’d suck.

  19. fan said:

I’ve been a long time Dragonforce fan but I think this album is horrible. I wish someone could convince me otherwise. It sounds like they hired the spice girls as their producers.

  20. Dunlavy said:

Album takes a little easing into, but I like it. Sold.

  21. whatever.. said:

If u hear one DF album, uv heard em all. When they were an obscure band at mp3.com, I used to like some of their tunes. Then the albums started comin and I found out that all they can do is create similar sounding songs each and every time. Hell, I listened to this album at some preview thing and I could not be more disappointed. These guys have less variety than one hit wonders. Who cares about the talent if you cannot compose well?

Musically, DragonForce are the equivalent of what Halo is for gamers. The hardcore fanboys will always drool over them but pure gamers/music lovers will not stand the same s### each and every time.

  22. Bomimo said:

Ok guys dont reply me i wont return…
i just wanna tell u all that your all right about this band…

Yes they are Lollygaggin around, but they are damn good at it
yes their music is epic and catchy… and dammit their vocals and guitars can get me high.
yes their first proper sounding concert was download festival 07.
yes they fall from the stage every time… but does the solo ever stop?
no they dont take themselves dead seriously and neither should we.
no i dont really care if his voice cracked… u try to keep your stoneface when your guitarist trips in his wires.
no they arent very good live.. but dammit what a stageshow, sry guys but not even Eddie the Great gives that feel.
no their songs are not all the same… they have different sound and lyrics… dont lie to yourself. you cant play “valley of the damned” at the same time as “once in a lifetime” its not synchrone.
no whe youve heard 1 album you havent heard them all unless you are a pirate.
c’mon all their different thats what makes u all tick on them… they have perfect studiosound but needs new live soundcrew and a bit of routine and less beers… and they would be pretty decent… i will be honest… im not goin to a concert till that day… yes that may never happen but then we will always have the studio albums…

just chill dudes or start a better band.

dunno bout you guys but they are a nice change from all those Top PROS who are sooo perfect… a little variation on stage is good…

  23. Nate said:

I can’t for the life of me understand how people say all of their albums sound the same. I have all of their albums and have listened to them all back to back repeatedly looking for repetitions within their music and aside from overly repeated lyrics, i can’t find any. Yeah so what they are a little cheesy with their music. So they aren’t perfect. No fucking band is. And for all you douchebags who say they sound horrible live. I’ve seen them a total of 5 times and they always sounded damn near how they do on the album. I honestly think a lot of people need to get the fuck off their high horses and understand that Dragonforce IS a talented and fun band. Whether they are the best of their genre or not is a matter of opinion and opinion only. I’ve listened to DF since their days on mp3.com and will continue to listen to them until they are no more.

  24. Kyuubi said:

I agree with Nate. Everyone points out the similarities and no one ever pays attention to what’s different. Their solo’s sound similar? They have as much variety as most metal bands. There is the typical shredding, but there is also down-tempo solo’s, non-distorted tones, and a focus on melody more then wankery. If anyone noticed, there is a lot less emphasis on “Hammer-ons” and “Pull-offs”, as was stated. There is more focus on how everything blends together, and the solo’s are more melodic then past albums.

They make damn good power metal, and I can’t stress that enough. If you don’t like their brand of power metal, don’t listen, and DON’T flame every forum just because you’d rather listen to music with depressing or angry lyrics and brutal guitar’s. This is DF, they’re good at what they do and they don’t give a shit if you hate them. DEAL WITH IT. GROW THE FUCK UP.

  25. Ricki said:

I honestly can’t get my head around all of you saying that their songs sound alike.. The few ‘maybe’ instances that i encountered would be the use of two words such as “Fire” and “Fury” simultaneously. So what? Just because a band uses 2 of the same words they are automatically unoriginal and suck?

PS: if you like DragonForce, look up the band Shadow Warriors on Youtube or a streaming website. (the MP3s however are a pain the find)
..Two guest performers of Shadow Warriors are ZP Theart and Sam Totman, so it really gives you the DragonForce feel.

  26. Jason said:

i hate how everyone says dragonforce sounds the same, every band sounds the same go listen to metallica or maiden or slipknot all there songs sound the same whats the big problem with dragonforce ? just some jealous cunts out there

  27. drew said:

unintelligible lyrics? Cause Im pretty sure I can hear them, so they can’t be inaudible.

  28. Mato said:

i used to like dragonforce a lot but when i saw how shitty there live performance was and when i found out they purposly make there music faster by using a computer, my respect for them deteriorated a lot. Oh and you guys have to admit that herman li is pretty much the whole band. The rest of them aren’t that great accept the drummer. PS to joe hensley: Herman Li is know where close to being as good as Iron Maiden or Metallica. So don’t start comparing them to him. Iron Maiden eats herman li for breakfast anyday.

  29. Jordan said:

I can admit some of their stuff does sound the same. Herman li is a crazy guitarist and i understand that totman writes most of the stuff…..but gud for him he aint playing everything .most of the band members are too drunk to make songs but at least they can semi play them even when they are drunk so give em that. And no dragon force will never compare up to metallica but metallica aint around right now so what other new shit can we listen to? There is not enough metal anymore and even though ilike death metal and melodic metal i still like these guys i dont know why but i just do. one more thing Lead singer kinda reminds me of the voice of iron maiden……………….. and what kind of person comes up with the name Dragonforce? im random but i dont care.

    peace

  30. ROWF said:

I used to hate this band, but after listening to them a few times, I fell in love. That’s admittedly a downfall for them – the fact that they need a good listen to before they can be fully appreciated. Another thing is that they DO repeat words and phrases. I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve heard the words: “blackness” and “madness”. But that’s just the way power metal goes, I suppose. And my sister thinks that they’d be better off with a female singer, …maybe to harmonize with the melodies or something. :| haha.

As for their new album, I can say it’s one of my favourites. It’s quite refreshing to hear old retro sounds from the 80’s video games added in too (intro to the warrior inside for example). And the intro to The Last Journey Home is honestly the most epic thing I’ve ever heard.

Dragonforce are kinda like Marmite – you either love them or hate them :P
But there isn’t actually a reason to come onto a forum just to flame them, tbh.

  31. aditya said:

well dis albm aint really bad but at the same time dragonforce may not be the greatest band ever but u’ve gotta respect their efforts….atleast they aint as badass like metallica who are motherfukinly non-existent these days

nd yeah of course john petrucci and dimebag darrel rule any fuckin day :)

  32. aditya said:

oh how could i miss dave mustaine

  33. Zairron said:

I enjoyed this album. Despite what everyone says, not all their songs sound different though I was annoyed by one song having an almost identical part to another earlier song.

Myths: Dragonforce Suck Live. They used to be terrible but everyone I’ve heard see them recently says they are great.
They use editing to cheat: Watch the making of dvd, the effects they use consist of Hermans kitchen and a pc.
Songs all sound the same: Ok yea, they do kinda. Just like AC/DC and Metallica and Slayer. Sorry but every band has a sound they like to stick to cause their fans like it. If you don’t like it, don’t try and ruin my good time by telling me how shit it is and I won’t bag out your favorite band.

Peace lovers, and the haters. I respect your opinions!

  34. Brady said:

I really like this album. I’m glad DragonForce tried some slower tempos with a few songs as well. Anyone notice the progressive rock elements? Maybe DragonForce is slowly leaning towards a change in sound.

  35. Diego Cortez said:

Haha it’s SO true that in order to appreciate DragonForce you need to listen to their songs a few times. You sort of gotta “acclimatize” to their music. However, I don’t think that’s a bad trait at all. There are a lot of remarkable things in life that need you to LEARN to like them.

  36. Jordan said:

Dont even Say Metallica are not existent they have a new album coming out in september….. its called death magnetic. and about Dragon force thernew album seems to be leaning towards a new sound but yet still sounds a little like inhuman rampage but at least they changed some of the lyrics.

  37. Heather said:

I will admit, I didn’t like or hate Dragonforce when I first heard them on Guitar Hero. I just looked at them like a song on a video game. My husband is obsessed! When I heard they were coming close to home, I go tickets. We, went, I loved It!! I thought they were pretty badass and a lot of fun live. They are very talented and I have much respect for them. You have to admit, they kick ass!

  38. James said:

DragonForce is the only band that can pull off true power metal today, yes they sound like the hair bands of old, but their music pushes it to a whole new meaning.

  39. Ryan said:

have they ever thought of using lyrics other than “flames, burning/burns, and firestorm?” These guys are a disgrace to metal. 12 year olds like them because they can play sooo fast! ZOMG. If you have seen their Youtube vid of them playing Through The Fire and Flames live at Graspop, they suck ass. Get some real metal if you are dying for good songs- Iron Maiden, Tool, Dream Theater, and Angra are the gold standard. Before anyone flames (pun <-) in return, look at DragonFarce’s lyrics and see that almost every song is the same whether you choose to believe me or not. Inhuman Rampage contained the word “Pain” over twenty times (not including choruses).

  40. Jimmy said:

‘Inhuman Rampage, Mark 2′ lol… nuff said

  41. Fuck u DF haters said:

dude wtf only buckethead can beat herman li…his new guitar and awesome motion sensing whammy…yea i agree that their vocals suck and songs sound the same…but the talent is just too much…

  42. Steven Inglis said:

Anyone who says Dragonforce don’t have musical talent is an ignorant wanker. Not only are they masters of their instruments, but to be able to arrange what they do into songs that hundreds of people love, well… it speaks for itself. Not to mention their ability to replicate it all live whilst still having a good time. Sure, someone mentioned that Dream Theater are more musically talented, and this isn’t what’s being debated, especially as they are two very different bands. Either way, Dragonforce are fun, and if you dig their music, then enjoy… if you don’t, then shut the hell up cos you probaly enjoy a band that I hate, and with a lot less talent than Dragonforce

  43. Eddie said:

“…the band has more talent in Herman Li alone than Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Underoath, Slipknot, and any other metal band you can think of combined.”

Im a fan of dragonforce myself (though dont like the new album much.) BUT…this comment has officially made my last of most insane things I’ve heard ever.

And I’m sorry to burst your bubbles but they are as fake as professional wrestling.

    Up The Irons!

I <3 DragonForce, I have every single album and i totally agree that their songs get repetetive but I STILL LOVE EM!! Keep On Rockin DF

  46. PJ said:

    Thanks for the review.

In terms of the debate, you’re either going to love Dragonforce or hate them.

I wasn’t even aware they had a 2008 album out, but as a drummer I am always blown away by Dave Mackintosh’s speed, stamina, and fancy footwork.

  47. g'day said:

i love DF they are my fav band ever i cant stop listening to them, ok all the people out there who are saying their songs are all the same, please you cant tell me that the last journey home or inside the winter storm sound like the flame of youth or revolution deathsquad….hell no they dont sound the same. as for the lyrics, indeed cheesey but with ZP Thearts insanley mad voice backed by huge guitar riffs, mad drum beats and sick keyboarding, the whole package comes out as a fucking epic beast. any band who is cool enough to call themselves dragonforce and throw cd titles out as valley of the dammed, sonic firestorm, inhume rampage and ultra beatdown are are fucking badass beast with the musical and epic prowess they deliver. to all those hater piss off and dont listen to them simple as that.

  48. Smith said:

thing with haters i that they take a flaw in a band and make it sound ten times as worse. Yeah, DF repeats lyrics, but whatever that SONG has meaning, the lyrics are only a portion of the song. Also anyone who thinks their fake is retarded not only does it clearly show how they made this album in a documentary, they go up and play it live every night. And no their songs do not sound the same, they have a distinctive sound that can make there songs instantly recognizable. And they did suck live, now they kick ass, ask anyone, hater or lover, they have to admit they have improved, though haters are too damn ignorant to admit anything. So really, fuck off, the fact u search this crap up to post bad shit on it means you lack a life. Also your probably a hypocrite cuz the band u may worship almost definatily shares a common problam with dragonforce

ps the album was good, I find each album possesses a different theme, this one did just that. Solid job

  49. James said:

I have no clue what’s wrong with you morons who think Dragonforce ISN’T a real band! Are you unable to think for yourselves and just go with the flow like a pack of dead fish? Do your mothers still dress you? Take a moment and THINK as difficult a concept as that may be for many of you.

99.99% of the time when people come forward with a GENIUINE complaint against DragonForce(Which is a rarity.)all they say is: “It all sounds the same.” What do I say to that? “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it!” Speed is what GOT DragonForce to where it is! It’s what they’re KNOWN for. Them trying to do something else would be like Antonio Stradivari making potholders.

And “All they do is PLAY FAST!”? I DARE you imbeciles to go home and try playing like Herman Li WITHOUT getting broken fingers.

As for the cheesy lyrics…NO DUH! Camp is half the fun of metal! Dream Evil’s “The Book of Heavy Metal” anyone? Or how about Manowar?

I won’t say that this is DragonForce’s BEST album ever, I will freely admit it has it’s flaws, but it has it’s high points too! I’d be willing to bet MONEY that if half you dimwits heard “The Last Journey Home” WITHOUT knowing it was DragonForce you’d be all over it!

Mabye next time you miscreants should actually LISTEN to an album like semi-sentient beings, rather than make judgements based on the band. Manowar kills. Rammstein burns. DragonForce speeds.

i just love how everyone has the time to go to a website about a band they dont even like and leave hate comments. wow, get a fucking life u losers! dragonforce is nothing like a joke. they are without a doubt the best metal band that has come in the 21st century. everyone believes it. not even mettalica can match dragonforce. their guitarist even said that he had no chance of EVER being as good as herman or sam. they’re just bad ass. they’re bringing the storm to the music scene. every metal band makes songs about satan or death or destruction and all that shit/ WHO CARES!!! dear god i have heard ENOUGH of that. every freaking band plays that kind of shit. then i hear dragonforce. up lifting lyrics, fast paced solos, not to mention the most bad ass musicians to be alive right now. but thats not all they do. they actually have fun while they’re playing. all of those other bands never have fun. they stand in the same place doing screamo and shit while the crowd watches. whenever i see a dragonforce concert, i see people in mosh pits, people crowd surfing, and people screaming their fucking hearts out with Zp theart as he sings through the fire and flames, ect ect. no one can match df live or in studio. why? cause no others band as more talented musicians. they are without a doubt the best band around. sure they’re not as big as the beetles, but they’re getting there. last time i checked, ultra beatdown attracted the most amount of people to every. show. they toured for almost 2 years and every show was fucking sold out. so none of yall can even talk about dragonforce cause yall obviously have no idea. so dont go spreading around any bullshit on how dragonforce “sucks”. get a fucking life and learn some facts before u start spreading shit around

These guys converted me into a Power Metal fan. I have not been able to find a band with blast beats (like death metal), catchy riffs, amazing solos, and such incredible true metal vocals (not growling or screaming) since. IF you know of any bands that combine those elements please speak up. Hit me up at dbayjay@gmail.com and let me know, I’m dying to hear them.
ZP can sing as beautifully Steve Perry from Journey and yes the drummer is way faster than Slayer ever was. It’s a pretty sick combination. The only thing close I’ve found is Heavenly. A great band for sure, but they do not play blast beats.
DragonForce has the potential to be one of the best bands of all time if they keep their anthems strong and improve on their lyrical content. A true original.
