i actually finished that piece i started. i'll be making some tweaks tonight and i'll put it up tomorrow. check back.
it talks a lot about the pros & cons of the different ideas and business models on the table today, and touches on joe's point that smaller bands need more support.

you being a total prick aside, you usually produce quality music. But I have no doubt that if you really dedicated yourself to making DDC work a your full time gig you could do it. Its all about networking and finding your niche, as well as a way to make it sustainable, countless DIY bands have been doing it for years, hell HORSE the band tours world wide about as much on their own terms as anyone else on the planet

The problem with the way Trent does it, if it's a problem at all, is simply that it isn't an option for new, or relatively unknown bands.

My band released a new single the day before Trent released The Slip. Did anywhere near as many people hear about it? Of course not... I don't have 20 years of major label backing, MTV videos, and countless mainstream magazine articles behind me. Getting to a position to do what Trent is able to do now is the hard part.

Oh yeah... WWW.DARKDISCOCLUB.COM

some of us remember when google first hit the scene, not by any means the clear-cut leader it is now. its advantage over yahoo, aol, and altavista was simplicity and convenience: one search box on a page. simple and fast, good results, no bullshit. they did one thing, did it well, and gave it away for free. convenience and quality came first, and they took over the world as everyone and their mother jumped on board. because they have short attention spans? no, attention spans aren't the issue then and they aren't now. it's always a matter of accessibility. of course google found many ways to make (what we call in the industry) shitloads of cash, but that's not hard when you have the entire world's loyal attention.

the record labels are trying to charge for a product that others are providing for free, as convenient as a couple clicks of a mouse button.

the only problem with trent's idea, as i see it, is that it's a little limited. let's say every time nine inch nails released a new song / video / album, every single fan went there to get it. that's a lot of traffic, a lot of attention. you could run ads on those pages and sell hard copies of everything and trent would make a decent amount of money. but how scalable is that business model?

this needs to be done on the label level. or larger.
i'm going to start working on a piece delving a little deeper into this topic.

does anyone else feel like we finally won? I mean there's still lots of work to be done, but it really seems like all this bullshit is finally about to end. more and more artists are embracing the revolution, more and more judges are telling the RIAA to go fuck themselves, We have paid download services that offer completely DRM free tracks @ multiple bit rates, and if things keep up there won't be any decent artists left on RIAA rosters to boycott....
