thanks for the kind words. my hopeful attitude has little to do with the fact that it’s perez hilton and more to do with the fact that the music industry is looking in a new place for answers. wouldn’t it be great if perez was successful, and labels started trusting other popular bloggers with imprints? not that we’re hoping to get one someday or anything, but there are people out there with great taste that are chomping at the bit to do everything they can to get truly good music heard, who are truly committed to helping to develop artists’ careers over time. in that sense, perez could be a trailblazer. i’m with you- the evidence doesn’t suggest he’s in it for the right reasons, or has what it takes. but we have to applaud the attempt.

It’s interesting to read an article that didn’t immediately jump the hate bandwagon, but I think it’s a little bit weird that of all the internet ‘celebrities’ that you’d give a break, it’s Perez Hilton.
Are you really suggesting that, if the music industry is to be saved, then it falls into the hands of a horrible man who has made exploitation and tittle-tattle his only reason to be famous?
The fact that he has jumped into bed with Warner suggests that he’s only interested in his own gain. Why would a man, who like you say had the commitment and patience to build his website into something more than a repository for bitter opinions, then make the schoolboy mistake of jumping into bed with a major?

I wouldn’t hold my breath, but congratulations for a balanced and refreshing article.

This article is quite correct. Perez is not famous for discovering talent (besides his own) and it’s much easier to have someone pitch a few good songs your way than go out and try to find new talent. Most importantly, if Perez claims that he wants to shake up the music business, he better find some quality artists that have serious potential and can make a mark in the industry. Otherwise, he’s just another wannabe.

Best of luck to you Ms. Hilton but I think it’s safe to say that an epic fail is on the horizon and probably a self-induced one. Your resorting to pulling the whiney-bitch-victim card and the mental coin toss to choose the most get away with-able fucked thing to call a person is a testament to your (in)ability to navigate the terrain amongst the big dawgs without pissing on yourself.

Almost every UK pop act that he “introduces” on his website is taken wholesale from Popjustice.com. Minus GaGa and Katy Perry who a) have been willing to kiss his ass and b) whose labels have been unfortunately willing to throw a lot of money at him for promotion, he certainly owes Peter Robinson almost all of his success as a faux musical tastemaker. If Popjustice were to shut down tomorrow he would be lost since he has no original search skills for music or content of his own. At all.

Good article, but unlike you guys, I cannot look past his/her/it’s douche factor to feel anything but disdain for this.

I get your point about how this could be a sign for making some of the changes you’ve been advocating in the music business for a while, but in the end is too much to ask for this annoying sack of crap to die in a car fire?

Wow.. I actually read through a few paragraphs before I realized what inane drivel I was subjecting myself to. It first got obvious with the total miss on Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head. They’ve signed a record deal, got tagged by Lily Allen to open her US tour, opened for Duran Duran and draw sell-out crowds almost everywhere they go.. but hey, Skwerl (such CUTE spelling) has their number, right? Oh..and the perfectly cute, hip disclosure of hanging with his mom’s pot dealer is priceless. Putting down Prez and just about everybody else in the article (I didn’t read it all, but the flavor was getting pretty predictable early on.)might get you some mileage, but as they say “Your mileage may vary.” Indeed. Put it away dude. There’s probably a better gig for you SOMEWHERE.
