News: Tom Morello
Pacific Rim, Guillermo del Toro’s first feature film since 2008’s Hell Boy II: The Golden Army appears to be one of the director’s most ambitious efforts. With the film’s release date only days away and as Warner Bros. impatiently hopes for their ambitious and risky undertaking to at least breathe under the enormous and empty weight of the disgraceful Grown Ups 2, all parties involved are making every possible effort to promote the new film. This includes a fine-looking two-minute TV spot for the film, as well as the release of an impressive theme song composed by Ramin Djawadi and Tom Morello.
The energetic, guitar-fueled score smoothly accompanies the bombastic and mythical air of the upcoming film with heavy yet triumphant instrumentation that presses on with eloquence, force and great emotion.
Djawadi, who also scored Iron Man as well as HBO’s Game of Thrones, spoke to Rolling Stone about his collaboration with Morello for the film, stating: “Guillermo and I were discussing adding a rock element to the score and Tom’s unique style and sounds really defined our robots.”
Morello, too, was wholly open to the idea: “When they asked me to put some giant robot riffs and screaming underwater monster licks on the film score, I was all in.”
Pacific Rim opens on July 12th, and Djawadi’s full-length score is available now.
