With a new album called Rat Farm due next month, the Meat Puppets have shared the first single from the album online and it couldn’t have been more timely. The legendary desert punks recently announced various SXSW appearances, including the opening slot for Dave Grohl and the Sound City Players on Thursday, March 14 at Stubb’s in Austin at Grohl’s invitation.

The single, full of latticed guitar work along side the signature mind-bending psychedelic sound that cements the Pups contribution to the cosmic country genre, Down contains a little bit of everything you’d expect from the cow-punkers. Folky melodies and twangy backing guitars walk listeners down a path of head bobbing sweetness. The solo hits from many different angles at once, leaving the possibility of a 15 minute jam fest if busted out live.  Hopefully, some of the lucky SXSW attendees will find that out first hand.

You can stream the song Down down below below.

For all the Meat Puppets tour dates SXSW and beyond, be sure to check out the band’s official website.
