By Fernando Scoczynski Filho

In one of the most unexpected turns we’ve seen in recent music history, a relatively “new” band is getting a full tribute album dedicated to them -The Black Keys will have a series of blues/rock artists covering their songs on Black On Blues – A Tribute to The Black Keys.

The first track unveiled so far is a cover of Lonely Boy, by Iggy Pop and Ginger Baker (formerly of Cream). Wrap your head around the concept by listening below (download over at Stereogum):

3. Girl Is On My Mind – Mike Zito & Cyril Neville
4. Gold On The Ceiling – Tab Benoit
5. I Got Mine – Leslie West
6. When The Lights Go Out – Papa Mali
7. Next Girl – Oli Brown Band
8. Money Maker – Dave Davies & Huw Lloyd-Langton
9. Howlin For You – Albert Lee
10. Everlasting Light – Pat Travers
11. Chop And Change – Larry McCray

This is strange. Interesting, but strange. And its a shame there’s so many El Camino + Brothers tracks, its 9 of the 12! Thickfreakness deserved better.

  2. Zac Gelfand says:

I think this is absolutely terrible. His voice at the beginning isn’t even close to being on key and the opening drum fill doesn’t even work. The vocals are exceptionally boring and I don’t know why the Black Keys even need a tribute album. It’s not even like they’re an inactive act, they’re still TOURING. I just don’t understand why this was necessary in the first place. I saw the Black Keys at Madison Square Garden in March and they were spectacular. If I were the Black Keys, I would NOT be happy.

This is plain awful and unnecessary.

I like Iggy Pop. But, that sounds like a drunken cover band at the local tavern. I have no problem with the concept of a covers album for the black keys and I don’t even have a problem with the thought of Iggy Pop being on it. I just don’t think that was the right song choice.
