News: The Magnetic Fields
Watch Magnetic Fields Get Cross-Dressy In ‘Andrew In Drag’ Video
There exists a lyrical magnetism in Stephin Merritt and The Magnetic Fields’ music that remains largely unparalleled in our time. With a heartening mix of acoustics, synths, deadpan lyrics, and low, downcast vocals, The Magnetic Fields have found the perfect template to convey the lovely and absurd in one pristine package. While the band will forever be celebrated for their unfathomably substantial 1999 record 69 Love Songs, the ingenuity of their music has yet to lose its luster.
Their latest album, Love at the Bottom of the Sea, is slated for a March 5th release, and the video for their first single Andrew In Drag is now available for your viewing pleasure below:
“The only girl I ever loved was Andrew in drag,” Merritt bellows playfully in Scott Valins’ finely crafted video, singing a curiously wonderful tale of a “a straight guy who falls madly in love with the drag persona of his straight friend Andrew.” The 2-minute song and video allow the viewer to examine the notion of identity in a whole new way, with make-up and clothing coming off and on in split, colorful instances and as the music not once strays from its eccentrically tongue-in-cheek bearings. It is all a bizarre, amusing affair, and one that shines primarily as a result of the richness of Merritt’s vision and the Magnetic Fields’ glistening melodies.
