On August 20th of last year, respected composer and music supervisor John O’Brien was found dead in a Chicago hotel room. While O’Brien may not be a household name, you have no doubt heard his compositions in numerous films including Pineapple Express, Four Christmases and Iron Man. With O’Brien leaving behind a pregnant wife and a four year old son, Velvet Revolver axe man (and Sons of Anarchy theme composer) Dave Kushner organized an all star benefit for the family.

The concert was held on January 12th, 2012 at the House of Blues in West Hollywood, CA and featured a lineup of heavy hitters including Sheryl Crow, Maroon 5 and Tom Morello’s alter-ego The Nightwatchman. Yet the most notable performance of the night was a reunited Velvet Revolver. The “super group” shared the stage together for the first time since 2008 and performed a total of four songs. Highlights of the short set included Sucker Train Blues, Slither and a cover of the Pink Floyd classic Wish You Were Here.

When asked about the future of Velvet Revolver, Kushner told Rolling Stone the following:

“We haven’t played together in four years, and so we’re really just like, ‘Let’s see how this goes,’” he says.

And if Thursday’s show does go well?

“I know everyone’s got other commitments, but I think everyone’s like, ‘Let’s get this thing done and get through this and then we’ll see.’”

Don’t hold your breath.
