Van Halen’s ‘Tattoo’ Arrives: Watch The Video

By Johnny Firecloud

The new Van Halen single has arrived, and along with it a video. You can watch them both below, in anticipation of the band’s comeback album A Different Kind Of Truth, which arrives Feb. 7.

Welcome back to the 80s. Fucking hell, it was bad enough the first time.

    That… was dreadful.

Sorry, but this is pretty fucking terrible. If they’d put this same shit out with Gary Cherone singing, it would be slagged to hell and back and nobody would give a fuck. But because it’s DLR–even though he seems to have largely forgotten how to sing–everyone’s pumping it up like the second coming. “She’s The Woman” has been available on bootlegs for years and it’s nothing to write home about either. As much as I would have loved to be able to say otherwise, I, for one, think this album will pretty quickly disappear without much impact.

Well put. This is the equivalent of a b side track for Van Halen. The biggest shock for me was that this song was much less impressive than the Chickenfoot “Big Foot” single. I like Sammy. But I was less than impressed with the continued bashing he was doing of VH and the new record. Now I stand corrected. I think he was simply telling the truth. I was for certain going to buy this album. Now I’m waiting to preview the other tracks before I buy what sounds like a Roth solo album.

I’d rather listen to this than all the hipster bands dominating the airwaves these days.

  4. Scott says:

I dig it! Great guitar work! Some cheesy lines by DLR but thats pretty much what he has always done. Sounds like great R&R to me! Better then most of the new shit we hear on the radio these days!

  5. Rizz says:

I like it, David Lee Roth is just the most epic frontman of all time and I’m glad to see they got their shit together.

I guess this won’t help turn me into a VH fan…

If Fair Warning didn’t do it, nothing will.

Sounds like you may be more of a Bon Iver kind of person.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

    • T.V. says:

Really, don’t expect their first new material in 28 years to win you over. Get the self titled debut, stick it on from start to finish at a stupid volume, then rinse and repeat with Fair Warning.

The song is an updated version of a song that VH use to play back in their bar years in the 70′s and was performed a few times on their 1978 tour originally known as “Down In Flames”. Looks like Dave rewrote the words and some new music was added but it’s not that different really. Sammy Hagar did say the band was using old songs on this album (“She’s The Woman” and “Bullethead” are two other old songs that will be included as well!). Not a fan of the song but the video looks cheap as hell. Has that “Jump” one camera recorder look to it. Then again music television doesn’t air much music videos anymore so who cares?

  8. Al says:

Granted, it’s not terrific, but I have a feeling that the CD will have 2-3 gems on it. I lived thru the ’80s, and VH was one of that dimly-lit decade’s bright spots. I for one am excited and only wish it wouldn’t have taken so damn long to get them to reform and record new material.
And agreed with some other posters, this is as good as most of the stuff being passed off as rock these days. I don’t like Nickelback either, but that drum geek for the Black Keys probably needs to back off the line of scrimmage a little bit, seeing as he couldn’t get laid in a monkey whorehouse with a bag of bananas, not to mention that all the talent in that band is standing TO HIS LEFT. It’s like Meg White talking shit…but I digress, looking forward to hearing the rest of this record, getting turned onto more stuff via AQ, and seeing VH 2/22/12 in Indy!

  9. Reverend Justito says:

    Wolfgang is a chunky monkey.

  10. Hahahahaa BLOCKED on colonic spray principle.

  11. Chad says:

Sorry guys, it’s just that VH is my favorite band of all time. Kinda feel like a need to defend ‘em, schoolyard at recess fisticuffs style.

Surely that happens to you when you feel strongly about a band people are slagging?

For the record, no way was I trolling. I thought I had some good points no?? :-)

  12. fcr says:

whats wrong with these idiot writers???!!! van halen sucks but they all think foo fighters are the best band in the universe, not bashing foo f. but if you hate 80′s van halen, you dont get rock and roll..

  13. Skwerl says:

    i love 80s van halen.
    i hate this.

  14. alex says:

I’ll be back in five minutes, I’m going to gouge my ear drums out with broken glass because I hate them. I got no problem with old men making music but this lot need to put those instruments down and kill themselves.
Perry Farrell is proof that in older years your music can still be good (discount the solo stuff).
The chorus would have sounded better as ‘dog poo, dog poo’ instead of ‘tattoo’.

  15. fmuff says:

I’m a big 80′s metal fan. You can throw poo at me if you want, but I loved that stuff and still enjoy some of it. But a lot of those bands are still trying to make music and it isn’t working anymore. That scared me about this VH album too.

After listening to the song, it’s … OK. Sounds like it could be one of the album tracks from Roth’s first few solo albums. That’s not a ringing endorsement, but it could be helluva lot worse. I have hope that VH can pull this together and come out with a decent-to-good album, but I don’t have ANY expectation it’ll live up to other Roth-era VH at all (even the 2 songs from the Greatest Hits). I am also interested to hear Wolfie play. As much as this song is missing Anthony’s bg vocals, I was impressed with Wolfie’s playing on the Club Wha? clip of “She’s the Woman.”

But my opinion means shit, since I think the Cherone VH had a few good songs in there and as a whole was better than Balance.

Oh, the video though, was the worst fucking thing I’ve ever seen.

  16. Scotto says:

    needs more Gary Cherone.

  17. Rory says:

I don´t know what is more boring/lame…the song or the video. It isn´t even enough of a song to call it bad. This band should not be making new music.

Let´s be honest about Van Halen…they have 2 goods songs…Hot For Teacher and Eruption. I´ve seen them with Hagar and Roth…the shows were fun to an extent despite being outrageously over priced. They should just tour and leave new music to bands that are relivent.
