News:  The Flaming Lips

Flaming Lips Plan Collaborative Album, Run Lines With Ke$ha

By Steven Anthony

After starting the new year with Yoko Ono and her Plastic Ono Band, the Flaming Lips are hard at work on a few different projects for this year – the first being a collaborative album featuring everyone from Erykah Badu to Nick Cave.

We first heard about a new collaborative Flaming Lips album last fall, and in a recent interview with Rolling Stone,  Lips’ frontman Wayne Coyne revealed that things are moving along nicely.

The band already announced that they have finished recording with Edward Sharpe, Yoko Ono, Nick Cave and Neon Indian. After discussing his desire to work with both Erykah Badu and Ke$ha, Coyne has confirmed these collaborations by posting videos and pictures of the two artists on Twitter throughout the last few days.

As always, Wayne filled our Twitter feeds with great quotes about his recording sessions. Regarding his work with Dallas-based recluse Ms. Badu:

So after beating Erykah Badu and recording a cover of The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, (which will hopefully get released in a gummy face), Coyne hit the road to head to Nashville and record with everyone’s favorite John Travolta lookalike, Ke$ha.

Coyne also tweeted a video of Ke$ha moaning over what sounds like synthpop noodling mixed with a Prince-ish Linn drum. Coyne told Rolling Stone last week that he wanted to do a “weird rap” song with Ke$ha, so it looks like his dream is finally coming true. Just what every Flaming Lips fan wants to hear. He also shared with us an image from his pre-gaming session with Ke$ha:

The collaborative album is due out in April, potentially for this year’s Record Store Day. We’ll keep you updated with the Lips’ and their never-ending spiral into the weird.

The Lips already released their EP with Yoko Ono’s Plastic Ono Band, but it’s unknown if the collaborative album will feature different tracks than what was on the EP.
