News: Neil Young
Relive Neil Young & Paul McCartney’s ‘A Day In The Life’
Back in June 27, 2009, just a day after headlining Glastonbury Festival, Neil Young performed a special show at London’s Hyde Park. What made this particular occasion noteworthy was an appearance by Paul McCartney, sharing vocals with Young on the last song of the set – a beautiful cover of The Beatles’ irrefutable classic A Day In The Life. And now, there’s a great new reason to watch it.
Videos of the performance quickly surfaced back then, but one particularly stood out, recorded by YouTube user dsrc18. The footage showcased all the spontaneity and near-boyish excitement of the two legends onstage, throughout their extended, 8-minutes long version of the Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album closer. Recently, the same user came across a greatly superior audio recording of the concert (which might as well be soundboard-quality), and synced it with his video. The result is an absolute must-see for those unfamiliar with the performance, and a good excuse to re-watch it for those who already knew it. Watch it below:
Through some setlist and video research, it seems that Young stopped including the Beatles cover in his sets ever since that gig. It was probably the fair thing to do, given that a rendition like the one above could hardly, if ever, be topped.
