Re:Mix Labs Brings Cold War Kids, Underground Rebel Bingo To NY
Antiquiet’s East coast adventures in New York last weekend came to a brilliant finish with not only exhilarating sets from Cold War Kids and Datarock, among others, but a Twilight-Zone-on-ecstasy experience at the Underground Rebel Bingo event, courtesy of Re:Mix Labs.
Sponsored by Hyundai Veloster, Re:Mix Labs is a DJ workshop and multimedia event featuring music, films and gaming to support the RE:GENERATION series. Poised to teach up-and-coming DJs what it takes to become a professional mixer, the event aims to enlighten, inform and inspire with hands-on action and an overload of stimuli during the craziest musical week New York experiences each year. Earlier last weekend we had checked out a Q&A with Amir Bar Lev, the director of the forthcoming documentary RE:GENERATION, and a feature spin set from DJ Premier, among others.
Antiquiet’s been longtime fans of Long Beach heroes Cold War Kids, and we were thrilled to know they’d be on the bill. An open bar and some excellent opening-act sounds from Active Child set the mood for the night in the heart of New York’s Meatpacking District, with the cozy event space sporting three different tricked-out Velosters with otherworldly accessories – including two turntables in the rear of one of the vehicles.
CWK frontman Nathan Willett and company shuffled past the block-lone line outside and past our anticipating selves to take the stage around 10:30 for a set packed with their most upbeat material.
A rollicking Mexican Dogs led to a Robbers and Cowards highlight Tell me in the Morning, which set the tone for the bass-drop greatness of Hang Me Up to Dry. Ending on a powerful barroom blast of Saint John, we cleared out and FIGO, Mike Realm & Datarock set the tone for the next event at Re:Mix – Underground Rebel Bingo.
A blur of sexual energy, dancing, music and games that Grandma used to play, the Underground Rebel Bingo event ended the night with a bizarre blend of supercharged fun mixed with a complete hijacking of a game that used to be relegated to old folks’ homes. This dirty secret hardcore extravaganza is pure fun, and when it comes through your town you’d be wise to take part.
The series travels to Las Vegas November 1st, Miami December 2nd and Los Angeles December 7th. The multi-day, multi-media event that will feature music, gaming, and film in support of the soon to be released RE:GENERATION music documentary. Players from the documentary including Skrillex, Pretty Lights, The Crystal Method, DJ Premier and Mark Ronson, will be appearing and performing as part of select segments of the REMIX LAB events.
