Chuck D Drops ‘Black Steel’ With Portishead at ATP

By Johnny Firecloud

All Tomorrow’s Parties brought this year’s fest, titled I’ll Be Your Mirror and curated by Portishead, to Asbury Park, NJ for a rain-soaked collection of celebrated performances from a variety of acts unlikely to be found sharing a bill elsewhere. Taking advantage of the fact that his band Public Enemy was on the same bill as adored trip-hop royalty Portishead, Chuck D joined the elusive English group for a quick blast of the landmark PE track Black Steel In The Hour of Chaos.

This fan-shot video of Portishead’s Machine Gun isn’t the clearest quality, but it’s worth checking out for the sake of seeing two titans of influence connect onstage:

Portishead Feat. Chuck D

The guest appearance wasn’t the first time Chuck stepped onstage with Portishead, with a 2008 appearance in Barcelona Portishead’s headlining set was reportedly a tremendous success, with Beth Gibbons’ voice doing wonderful justice to the delicate “Wandering Star,” the band closing out the fest on the utmost high note.

Speaking of wonderful justice, check out Tricky’s ante-upping take on Black Steel:

Thanks to Stereogum for the clip.
