Watch the Video for Bon Iver’s ‘Holocene’
Justin Vernon has been on quite a roll so far. In a matter of three plain years, the Bon Iver frontman has transmuted from heartbroken recluse to musical visionary, releasing two of the best albums in recent memory – three, counting his work with the extraordinary Gayngs, embarking on raved about worldwide tours, and even contributing to both of Kanye West’s recent endeavors. While his first album, For Emma, Forever Ago, was an exploration of desperation and melancholy; the alluring sounds of Bon Iver, the musician’s sophomore album, finds light and takes the listener to a more radiant and atmospheric setting.
For an album that’s all about aura and ambiance, it is only fitting that Bon Iver’s video for Holocene debuted only hours ago on the National Geographic website. You can watch it below:
The mesmerizing video was shot entirely in Iceland by Australian visual artist Nabil Elderkin. It follows a young boy travelling through the extravagant Icelandic terrain, past blue and empty greens, arctic seashores, wondrous mountains and waterfalls, and volcanic landscapes exclusive to Iceland’s distinct nature. It’s always mystifying how these delightful sights can elicit such astonishing range of moods and emotions, but they clearly do. Bon Iver’s outstanding sophomore album is a sonically proficient marvel, and Elderkin’s beautifully shot video for Holocene rightly does it justice.
In other Bon Iver-related news, the post-dubstep prodigy James Blake recently hinted at a collaboration with the Vernon on his Twitter account, by simply tweeting: “24th August 2011 – James Blake & Bon Iver ‘Fall Creek Boys Choir’”. Fall Creek is a town in Wisconsin where Vernon owns a studio, and so this is very exciting news of a collaboration we hope to hear from soon.
