Kanrocksas Challenges Lollapalooza (With A Name Almost As Silly)

By Steven Anthony

While the rest of the music world was waiting for Lollapalooza to finally announce their lineup for 2011’s festival, a new challenger appeared.

Kanrocksas is set to take place August 5th and 6th at the Kansas Speedway in Kansas City. Yes, at exactly the same time as Lollapalooza, a brand new, slightly less expensive festival will be going on.

For a first year festival, Kanrocksas somehow managed to pull out the big guns. Taking the festival’s Friday night headlining slot? Eminem. Saturday night? Muse. This is most interesting because these two names have been heavily rumored for Lollapalooza this summer. Will the two acts be playing both festivals the same weekend? Only time will tell; Lollapalooza’s lineup is out later tonight.

Acts joining Eminem and Muse in Kansas City include The Black Keys, A Perfect Circle, The Flaming Lips, Kid Cudi, Girl Talk, Primus, Arctic Monkeys, Fitz And The Tantrums and Tinie Tempah, with more to be announced.

For any normal festival that would be a good lineup; considering this is Kanrocksas’ first year, that’s a pretty fucking spectacular direct attempt at stealing some of Lollapalooza’s steam. Here’s the 2011 Lolla lineup.

It’ll be interesting to see the two festivals compete for customers, but something tells me neither one will have trouble selling out. The only real problem I see in this situation is that somehow an entire committee of people agreed that Kanrocksas was a good name for a festival.

  1. Ball’s in your court, Perry. Let’s see what you got.

  2. Agreed on all points. Impressive lineup inclusions and crap fest name. Lolla lineup announcement shall be quite interesting! Lolla wins the fest name war. Every other “palooza” -play offshoot is dog ass though.

  3. Am I the only person who feels this could flop? For many years, the Wakurusa Festival called Kansas home. It was supposed to be the main competition for Bonnaroo. From what I understand, the Kansas State Authorities had a field day arresting campers/concert-goers for drugs, open containers of beer etc. Things got so bad that the festival has since downsized and relocated to Arkansas. If this type of activity goes on at Kanrocksas, there is no way we will see a year two.

In addition, we all know weather can be miserable during this time of year in the Midwest. The question is – would you rather be miserable in scenic Grant Park, or would you rather be miserable at the Kansas City Motor Speedway? Granted I have never been to the KC Motor Speedway, but I can only assume it’s not as nice of an environment for a show as Perry has going.

Finally, Lolla is a trusted brand. Kanrocksas is not. We will see if they have what it takes easy cash from Uncle Perry’s wallet.

I would rather be miserable at Grant Park, which I wouldn’t ‘cuz Chicago is a great town. KS Speedway, on the other hand, it the epitome of every redneck nascar cliche you have ever heard.

what if timmy gets picked up by a twister

  5. This would have to be a lot cheaper than $179 to make it worthwhile to go to Kansas
