New From Incubus: ‘Adolescents’

By Johnny Firecloud

Incubus has announced plans to release a new album in July called If Not Now, When? To kick off the anticipation, the band is premiering the album’s first single, Adolescents, today.

Check out the cover art for the single and listen to the promising little jam:

“Out of sight, out of mind / We’re out of time, out of mind,” frontman Brandon Boyd sings in the chorus to the track, a melodic mid-tempo jam with a depth of gravity that offers a new level of excitement for the July 12th release date for If Not Now, When? The song’s third-act breakdown is a Summer-breeze departure from the rest of the track, a pleasant island in the stream before the chorus returns.

    This sounds EXTREMELY promising!

  2. iAMcurtis says:

it also sounds like it’s EXTREMELY lacking balls!

  3. Houston says:

Go to pitchfork if you want balls (in your mouth).

  4. wallace yo says:

IT HAS TO SOUND LIKE OLD INCUBUS MAN. f that, this is good. mike’s guitar work is sweet. good song. bring on new incubus.

  5. Pete says:

Looking forward to hearing the new album. The last couple of albums were hit and miss. My favorite of theirs is Morning View. I like me some Incubus, good music you just chill to in the summer, and have a few drinks to, or some mother nature.

I think this song is superlative. Brandon’s vocals soar and Mikey’s guitar work is etheral and sharp. I just wish the subject matter was a little more upbeat. I do not think it is possible for Incubus to create a bad song-they are too good for that!

  7. Cody Lamie says:

Sounds great, might be the best Incubus song we’ve gotten in awhile.

  8. Cory Hatton says:

never cared about incubus, this isn’t too shabby though

  9. Elijah's Rain says:

I new it was Incubus as soon as the guitars and the voice came in. They have their sound down to a science so why fix what isn’t broken. Although that break was a little too serene for me.

  10. I wonder if Mark McGrath of Sugar Ray wakes up in the middle of night because Incubus stole his thunder as the king of vagina rock? I also wonder if Mike Patton wakes up in the middle of the night relieved Incubus no longer rips off his day job known as Faith No More?

Safe to say Incubus has been out of my mind since about 2002.

    • Houston says:

Are you kidding me? Incubus sounds nothing like FNM. Way to spit out a metaphor and it make absolutely no sense.

      • Houston says:

Hey guys, I wonder if Soundgarden ever wake up and are relieved that QOTSA no longer rip them off … Haha.

      • Skwerl says:

if you read the comment again, you’ll notice he said “no longer.”
and if you listen to s.c.i.e.n.c.e. again you’ll notice it’s basically a faith no more album.

        • mr spalla says:

This is the second time I’ve heard this comparison to Faith No More.. I don’t know shit about Faith No more — so I wiki’d them. Then I immediately lost interest… Any small coterie that agrees to let a crazy whackjob like Courtney Love front their band – is out of sight, out of mind .

          • Skwerl says:

hahahaha… whoa there. don’t believe everything you read on wikipedia. courtney was in (and very quickly out of) a very early and premature incarnation. now, mike patton may be every bit as much of a crazy whackjob as courtney love, but he’s a different sort, one with some class at least, and he happens to be one of (if not the) most talented vocalists to front a rock band in the past 20 years. don’t miss out.

        • Cody Lamie says:

Basically a FNM album? Sure the influence is there, but I wouldnt go that far.

        • SCIENCE is one of the best albums EVER!!!! It’s well thought out, and If you don’t own it then your knot a fan!!!! Basically U suck!!! Check out the song Antigravitity!!!!Don’t argue with me…you will never win!!! INCUBUS ROCKS!!!!!MY ALL TIME FAVE!!!!!!!!!

  11. stu says:

Light grenades was good, yes it wasn’t ‘Science’ but most bands change their style, especially if they’ve been around for awhile.

  12. brett says:

After this long and this much money, why can’t Incubus experiment a bit? I guess I will just be hopeful that the album will have some stranger songs as the first (and second) singles are always so straightforward and boring.

At least Light Grenades had Rogues and Pendulous Threads.

  13. nico says:

    nothing new

  14. Chris James says:

That just simply …………………………. ROCKED BALLS! Incubus always has the ability to change and grow with every album they release. I cannot wait until july 12 2011

  15. boomershadow says:

It’s better than anything on their last album, and I do have high hopes, but so far I’m only thumbs sideways about it.

  16. Brian says:

At least Incubus doesn’t sound like this retarded ass 70′s revival that seems to be happening with most alternative rock these days. Every time I turn on the fucking radio it’s all the same god damn bullshit (Arcade Fire, City and Color, etc.)

  17. iAMcurtis says:

when i say it lacks balls, i don’t mean that it isn’t ‘dark enough’ or ‘heavy enough’..i mean it sounds EXTREMELY safe to myself. that is all

  18. tbone57 says:

Im a big Incubus fan. Seen them live 7 times. That said, this song is simply the further Brandonification of Incubus. Just a vehicle for his voice. Once band get big, they have a whole host of hangers on from family to business types, so the pressure these days seems to lead band to avoid taking risks.

Moring View and Make Yourself rocked. This, not so much. sadly…

    • Jon says:

Listen to the oft criticized Light Grenades’ Pendolous Threads, and listen to A Crow Left of the Murder and then see if you still think they are avoiding risk. They can easily recycle the sounds of their singles and cash in. But while maintaining that sound (Megalomaniac) they still go in lots of directions throughout their albums.

  19. Houston says:

Since when does a band have to reinvent themselves to be relevant? I don’t understand it, I guess. I’m so sick of the fuckheads nowadays complaining that if it doesn’t break any new ground it’s not great or relevant anymore. Fuck that. Zeppelin never reinvented themselves, they just played great music. This reinvention shit can eat shit. It’s nothing but hype machine anyways.

    • ShesOnllyRockNRoll says:

      What Houston said ^

    • Ummmmm ok I have decided that you are a giant bag of dicks. Put on Led Zep I, then put on Coda. Much like Incubus, Led Zep’s sound was very different from their original sound. Then again, why am I arguing with an Incubus fan who clearly has never heard the bands earlier, Faith No More inspired material?

      • Houston Molinar says:

In regards to the critics back in the day, Zep was utter shit and never did anything new. Rolling Stone shit on every album they ever created, calling their releases, “trite” and “uninspired” .. So, in this context, why the FUCK do you need to reinvent yourself to be relevant? It’s almost become an industry of bands that strive to reinvent themselves for critical acclaim to please the pussies who feed the hype machine. Every album is something “different” and “a new direction” now days .. Fuck that. If you feel inspired, then go in a different direction, ie, Radiohead (Kid A era).. But why STRIVE to reinvent yourself for the sake of reinventing yourself?

        And, you’re right, I’m sorry .. I don’t hear FNM in Incubus. Not even S.C.I.E.N.C.E. :-\

  20. Jon says:

….and I dig the song. Can’t wait for some new Incubus. They can do whatever they want…..stay the same or keep changing, it’s gonna be good stuff either way.

  21. Houston says:

From what I heard, 10,000 days was NOTHING new and all these idiots ate it the fuck up .. But any other band that doesn’t break new ground with a release is “not relevant” any more. Smh.

  22. I like it, want to listen to the whole thing already. I bet it keeps up, these guys can actually write songs, and they’re really good at it.

  23. this song it’s so incubus!

  24. Rory says:

    ZZZ….that song was fucking boring!

I was once really into this band…but they haven’t done anything interesting for a long time now.
