Listen To Clutch’s Acoustic ‘Drink To The Dead’

By Johnny Firecloud

On April 26th, Maryland rockers Clutch will release a deluxe double-disc 25 song reissue of their phenomenal Blast Tyrant album from 2004.

Noisecreep premiered an exclusive bonus track from the reissue, an acoustic version of Drink to the Dead. The electric version of the song originally appeared on the band’s 2001 Pure Rock Fury album, and while it kicks the ever-loving shit out of this version, a stripped rendition is always a nice change of pace.

The reissue title is actually Blast Tyrant’s Atlas of the Invisible World Including Illustrations of Strange Beasts and Phantoms, but Clutch decided to skip the Fiona Apple route and save us all a lot of typing. Thanks, guys.

The constant flow of articles like these make you guys suck. who gives a fuck about stick shift or whatever-the-fuck their name is. There hasn’t been anything fresh on this site since…the radiohead release. And I don’t even know if that counts. I literally come to this site every morning in hopes of you guys saving my soul from the Rebecca Blacks of today and I’m let down every time with PEARL JAM, SOUNDGARGEN, NIRVANA, etc. Bands from the grave. Old Men who succeed on cheese. I’m dyin’ here! Now, I can’t put all the blame on you since you’re just bringing us the music(i.e. it’s a bummer that the strokes new sound kinda sucks…again. But I’ve been wanting to hear the rumored new material adnw ell, that’s what I got). Either way, what’s the deal bro???? Can we jump into the 21st century and this brand new decade that is upon us. There has to be SOMEBODY who agrees on the fact that we have all this big opportunity now as artists(as far as the fall of record labels) to bring something completely fresh to the music table. We have this opportunity to bring out some sort of style that we were too afraid to show anybody because “they wouldn’t get it” or some bullshit like that. The point, is you guys should have someone traveling the fuckin’ country/internet searching with all of their will and might for something NEW to listen to for people to fall in love with. Anyway, just so we’re clear, I love you guys and there’s nobody like you. You introduced me to The Lefsetz Letter back when you were talking about that Eno interview I and couldn’t thank you more for that shit. Like I said, I’m dyin’ out here and hating going back to old records. I’ve been doing it for much too long and there’s gotta be someone out there ready to momentarily save my world(i.e. the fact that I’ve never felt anything like I felt Deloused in the Comatorium). Sorry but I am that guy. This doesn’t mean I’m knocking every record I come across though. Well this comment is just rude in length so I’m stopping here. Take it easy Firecloud.

    • Im real happy for you and imaletchu finish, but you are a idiot. Did you totally miss all the SXSW coverage? I was gonna take your dumbass apart but I stopped reading after that.

      You are retarded “.”

    • Dearest Devoted Plankton:

Please accept this gentle colonic fisting of truth as a well-intentioned arrow in the right direction to a world of content you’ve clearly missed, and not the spiked-glove bitchslap it may come across as. We’ve introduced several bands to you during our time on these wonderful tubes, some of them before anyone else had bothered to listen to, let alone cover. Take The Bronx, for instance, or Behind the Ghost. Then there’s also Buffalo Death Beam, Le Butcherettes, Fitz & the Tantrums, Sabrosa Purr, Wharf Rats, The Silent Comedy, Nicole Atkins, Garrison Starr and Pop Levi, just to name a few. And look, I included links to every single one, so you don’t have to pull out the click shovel and dig around yourself. It seems you haven’t had much luck with that.

These are all artists on the newer side that we’re excited about. We’ve been doubling down so far this year, as promised, to bring you even more new music and kickass sounds. Does that mean we’re loosening up our standards of taste and vision for Antiquiet? Does that mean we aspire to be a sibling of Pitchfork that doesn’t wear pants that require a 2 inch dick and chicken legs to fit into? No sir, it certainly does not. Our “must be this awesome to ride” stick is still at a healthy height, considerably higher than every one of our peers. We’ve just been doubling down to find more good shit this year than we did last year, because like you so eloquently pointed out, the music world needs some freshness.

Does that need for freshness mean we abandon what got us started in this world to begin with, however? Does it mean we reject our own musical passions? Hell to the fuck no, good sir. As long as Skwerl and I still hold the reins of Antiquiet, you’re going to see updates on our favorite bands. Several of those bands include projects that involve Eddie Vedder, Josh Homme and/or Jack White, but by no means are we exclusively beholden to showering praise upon them. You didn’t see us covering every new project Jack White’s been lining up with crypt-keeper Dixie queens, and you won’t see us lathering praise simply based on associated names – PJ’s Backspacer got an underwhelming rating here, and we didn’t cover Josh Homme’s friends Mini Mansions because they’re unfathomably fucking terrible.

“The point, is you guys should have someone traveling the fuckin’ country/internet searching with all of their will and might for something NEW to listen to for people to fall in love with.” You know what? You’re fucking right. We’ve done our considerable part so far, but it would be great to just travel and be an independent talent scout. The only catch, however, is that we’re grownups with families and bills. If you’d like to start funneling cash into a PayPal account to sustain this brilliant idea, you’re more than welcome to do that (speaking of, hey Skwerl, how bout that “Fund the Beast” donate button?). I could go for a year on the road, with the sole purpose of finding new music.

In the meantime, until that becomes a workable concept, we’ll just keep digging from the home base, fighting the good fight and doing the kind of shit that drives everyone else crazy. Like bringing you new music that rocks, or interviewing people who know what the fuck they’re talking about in the industry, or breaking the news of the Bowie lost-album leak, or being the first crew to hear the new Foo Fighters record while riding in the White Limo, or landing the first-ever Them Crooked Vultures interview or, hell, I dunno… throwing a legendary blowout capacity show at SXSW with 13 kickass bands and over 10k rsvps.

If you’re looking for new music, how bout you start there?

MUCH appreciated Johnny…and Mr. Farris. But really, you’re on point with all points made. I think I haven’t had much luck because I’m a picky, bitchy, asshole. I click the links and just don’t get it. Anyway, better for me in the future I hope. And yes, please keep fighting the good fight. Thanks.

    • Good volley, ol’ chap. And by all means, if you’ve got any sounds in mind that you think should get greater coverage, and you don’t work for a record label, band or PR company, let us know.

Oh and for the record my Tres Mts article pitch was turned down by Johnny, so he is correct when he declares they don't pitch every PJ project.
