News:  Holy Shit

A Tool & Metallica Rock Monster Is Created… For a Moment

By Johnny Firecloud

At their Jan. 14th performance in Honolulu, Hawaii, Tool were joined onstage by Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammet for a bit of face-melting mid-song metal extravagance. In the middle section of Tool’s spiraling epic Lateralus, Hammet lead the band into a partial cover of Metallica‘s Orion, giving fans a glimpse of a crushing musical Voltron before segueing back into Lateralus.

Check out some fan-filmed audio of the collaboration below – interestingly, Hawaii was also the location where Hammett joined Tool for a rendition of Sober in the Summer of 2006.

The song cuts out just before the final run-up to the climax, and we can’t have that. So while the video is inferior, you can get those final rocks off here:

With any luck, Tool will intensify the sporadic progress of their next album, the much-anticipated follow-up to their 2006 masterpiece 10,000 Days.

  1. Even watching this on YouTube was surreal. One of the best live acts I’ve ever seen without a doubt.

I think I remember reading Hammett lives in/has a house in Hawaii so that makes sense

  3. Buckets for my salivation will be many, and there won’t be enough. I need another TOOL CD.

  4. That was great. I love Tool with all my heart, but Maynard’s losing his voice badly. Cry and scream all you want, but it’s pretty obvious.

I saw this video and have seen them in concert multiple times and MJK’s voice is done. On the flip side, I was playing with dolls in my daughters playroom last night and Sober came on the radio, which for a second I had to pause because his voice in the Undertow days was very, very powerful.

After Lateralus it was all down hill. Tool influenced certain parts of my life in a very positive way (ie: Communication) so when things like MJKs voice going south occurs its a difficult transition knowing that powerful voice you heard on Undertow was a thing of the past. Nonetheless, very thankful for a band like Tool – nothing they released has been short of quality, in my opinion.

    • how has MJK’s voice gone to shit? i saw them in concert last year and he was belting out some potent renditions of their older material. a video would be good.

No time to look for a video right now, but if you listen to the video above he clearly is having trouble hitting any notes at all. Go back to the Aenema tour and listen to Third Eye or 46&2, or even some video’s from when they were playing clubs in the Undertow days. Clearly different. But that is okay, this is not a criticism of MJK, its just part of getting old. Some can switch things up as they get older, such as singing in a different key, but some cannot (MJK). Tool songs require power. Then again, perhaps it is just a cash grab for him? Who knows, but that argument is stale (ie: Metallica)

I don’t think Maynard is losing his voice I just think Tool isn’t his #1 priority anymore so he doesn’t really give his all.
