R.E.M. Debut New Song Featuring Eddie Vedder

By Skwerl

After dropping a Christmas single, as well as the lead single from their forthcoming album Collapse Into Now, R.E.M. has released another new album track. This one’s a lot easier to get through than Discoverer, and not even because it features Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder.

Have a listen to It Happened Today, via De Ozonlaag, with a hat tip to Consequence Of Sound:

Ed’s in there somewhere. And we’re now just a little more excited to check out Collapse Into Now, set for a March 8th release.

Eddie loves this folky stuff it’s the Dylan in him. It’s ok, nice melodies but I can barely make him out and only until the end can I really hear him. Discoverer started off promising then I don’t know where Stipe was going with those lyrics.

  2. This is… really underwhelming. Discoverer is much more promising and hopefully more representative of what we can expect from the album.

  3. Jo Heck says:

heard him in there near the end..kind of “into the wild-ish” eddie in the background there near the end.
would have preferred more but i like the song anyway
been a while for me and R.E.M.
    glad to hear it. :D

  4. wow, thanks ron wood, i mean rem, for wasting everyone’s time with this one. we appreciate you allowing eddie to barely make moaning noises on your song. way to utilize him. WTF????!!!!!!!!!!

i like it. i love the wailing vocals. this feels like a 9/11 aftermath song to me but i love how Stipe isn’t specific with it. I like how they didn’t over use Eddie. I was afraid he may over power the song with his presense. This song feels very Out of time-ish era. I can’t wait to ride down the highway listening to this one. I feel like the song would really fit after a break up or… a death. can’t wait for the album.

This is the definition of wallpaper music. I’m hoping to hear something better for this album

Underwhelmed at first but after a few spins – this is classic R.E.M.. If this had been released in the nineties it would be destined to be played by countless radio stations ad infinitum. In 2010 or 2011, I am not sure what reception this will. Either way, I think REM are about to release their most commercial sounding record in years.

You guys who are hating on this song are drunk, or have bad taste in music. Second half of this song is incredible, and this is classic Out of Time and Life’s Rich Pageant-sounding R.E.M. New record is going to be awesome.

  9. are you all DEAF?!!!!!!! please don’t waste our time or eddie’s time like this ever again. what a waste of one of the greatest voices ever. let him take over a verse or sing the chorus or SOMETHING!!!. if i wanted to listen to eddie howl or moan or groan i’d listen to into the wild. not an awful song, but could’ve been an awesome song.

  10. Is Eddie sponsored by the company that makes those notebooks? I’ve seen him with those since the nineties, man! Get him an iPad or something!

hahaha….that’s just oldschool songwriter stuff. I can relate but I have graduated to leaving nonsense sentence fragments on my iphone now lol

    • You’ll see eddie with those composition books until the day he dies. Dates back to his teen years… there was an interview somewhere a hundred years ago where he mentioned it. #fanboidetailobsession
