Early Black Sabbath Soundboard Recording Unearthed

By Johnny Firecloud

How about a little early-era Black Sabbath soundboard action to warm the cockles of your Rock-loving heart this holiday season?

A YouTube user namesd Sid777rock posted the following soundboard recording of Black Sabbath’s Hand Of Doom on Saturday afternoon, claiming that the track is from a show in 1970, but the exact date and location of the source are unknown. One thing’s for sure – it sounds pretty fantastic, and it’s definitely worth a listen for even casual fans.

The studio version of Hand Of Doom appears on Sabbath’s 1970 sophomore release Paranoid, one of the must influential heavy metal albums of all time. Before the bat-biting, ant-snorting reckless insanity and legacy-dismantling reality TV shows, there was the music – the songs that kicked our asses and inspired our heroes. That’s on full display in this recording, and that alone makes it worth sharing with you.

The Metal Den is trying hard not to shit themselves over the recording, claiming the recording is “being touted already by many as the greatest sounding Black Sabbath bootleg ever discovered.” We’re not sure about that (though not challenging it – I’ve heard about two total Sabbath boots in my life), but we appreciate the heads up either way.

In the liner notes of his hits album “The Ozzman Cometh” Ozzy claimed to have hundreds of old recordings from the early days stashed away. He put two old Sabbath recordings on that album and that was the last I heard of it. If Sabbath’s playing was really this tight back then they should get those tapes out.

‘Paranoid’ was not Sabbath’s debut album. Still awesome though.
