Beastie Boys Get Serious? Say It Aint So…

For those of us who enjoy both an immature sense of humor and Beastie Boys, this news could leave you a bit broken-hearted. Kind of like going to take shit, but having only farted.

Yeah, we’re not above a little potty humor. Suck it. Anyway, in a brief interview, Beastie Mike Diamond said that since his bandmate Adam Yauch was diagnosed with cancer in his salivary gland and lymph node, he and the other two Beasties have been looking at things through a more mature lens.

“Serious illness does frame fart jokes differently. But at the same time, more than ever, we want to enjoy ourselves and make people happy,” explains Diamond.

Haven’t they seen Patch Adams?!  Everyone knows laughter is the best medicine!  The songs that were to make up Hot Sauce Committee Part 1 were decidedly less mature than the group’s last full-throttle effort, To The 5 Boroughs (not to diminish 2007′s underappreciated, excellent The Mix-Up), which is why they’ve decided to shelve it for now.

Will those songs ever see the light of day?  If so, they’ll arrive after Part 2.

As for the band’s active progress, Yauch’s been recovering nicely and the group is planning on releasing Hot Sauce Committee Part 2 sometime in Spring 2011.  When asked why they’re planning on putting out Part 2 before Part 1, Diamond offered this clever analogy: “Liken it to the subway train system. Let’s say a train starts running late. Instead of letting it catch up, they take the train behind it and rush it through so that one stays on schedule. This is exactly how we’re operating.”

So even though the Boys are maturing a little bit and it could be a while before we get to hear the earlier material, it’s hard not to get excited about new Beastie sounds in 2011.
