Damon Albarn Teases 4th Gorillaz Album, New Project With Flea

By Byron Blocker

Right now Damon Albarn is snaking his way through North America and Europe packing shows with a massive neon light spectacle and the sweet sounds of everybody’s favorite animated band. Pausing from the busy tour schedule, Albarn spoke about a new Gorillaz album as well as plans to work with a certain sock-twirling bassist.

Hot on the heels of the March 2010 release of Plastic Beach, Albarn is claiming the next Gorillaz record is “three-quarters finished”. In a new interview with Stuff.co.nz, describes the new album as “basically a tour diary… I guess it’s my love letter to America. I used to be baffled by this place, and I guess I still am in some ways. America confused me enormously but right now, with all that’s going on, this is a good place to be and this has been a great tour.”

As if that’s not enough, Albarn has plans to start working with Flea on a new album. Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen will join the two, and Albarn says the album will be “centered around what he does”. He dismissed any hope of a Blur world tour for at least “five or six years,” saying, “I have a young daughter and it’s just not feasible, it’s too long away from home… I’ve been bringing up a family and I’ve been enormously productive because of not touring – it’s really that simple”.

If simplicity is the key to another amazing Gorillaz album, followed by some heavy grooves with Flea and Allen, then by all means, we’ll cast our vote to stay home and work. We could really use a respite from the barrage of generic, vocoder-drenched beats passing for dance music lately.
