Come Around Sundown is due out October 19.

Oh KOL! As an early fan, I’m disappointed with their new direction. Their songs are becoming more and more easy listening. Their first 3 albums were unique and raw, and now they sound more like a southern U2. The price you pay to appeal to the masses i suppose.
I’m not sure if this album is about appealing to the masses Elijah. This seems more like an older sounding, obscure pop album. I don’t get your U2 reference at all unless you are talking about that pumped up bass in the mix and of the songs and the sometimes overused “ooohhhhhhhh’s” background vocals. I can’t say or want to give U2 credit for those sounds. That up front bass and background vocal is on a metric ton of albums.
I will give the band credit where credit is due… they could have re-wrote the last record and they didn’t try to recreate that sound. They could have re-visited the bands “earlier sound” and they didn’t do that either. They did what everyone says they would like from a band that hits it big, “Do something different.” They did that. It will be interesting how the “use somebody” fan of this band will look at this album. I kind of feel like if you liked the first 3 albums, you aren’t going along for this ride. This album has the potential to go over a lot of music listeners heads (and ears).
I’m a KOL fan and to be honest, im sure i’ll download it whether legit or not remains to be seen. The U2 reference I’m making and anyone whose a U2 fan knows what I’m talking about is in how some songs are drenched in reverb and delay with an emphasis on that stadium sound with alot of atmosphere. The difference of course is Bono isn’t singing on it so now you kinda have a poor man’s My Morning Jacket. I’m just saying….
the only reason you dont like their change in direction is because its more main stream and you would rather be one of a select few who actually know and like the band becuase then that makes you more ‘origional and non-conformist’. i hate it when people critisize bands for becoming more mainstream. if you was in a band yourself course you would rather create music that more people like. i think KOL have still stuck to their roots but have adapted their music and if you dont like it…then dont listen
This sound is better than any of the other crap that is being put out there. I do not think it is even close to My Morning Jacket. This is a new sound for this band. I was not a fan before but think they have used their influences in a positive way.
Hilarious…. i told my friend located in the rust belt that they are the southern Nirvana.
A huge compliment you might say?
not these days
if anything, they are improving their sound. their earlier work was raw because they sucked ass and did not know what they were doing. its called evolution.
Triple J (an Aussie radio station) is streaming it aswell, http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/
Elijah pretty much nailed it. What happened to the raw sound of Molly’s Chambers, Black Thumbnail, Camaro, etc. So disappointed with the last two albums (including this one).
an already massively underrated album
seriously? the first two KOL albums sucked ass, especially aha shake heartbreak, i don’t know why everyone goes on about them. i much prefer the last two, and while this album may not be fantastic, it’s a hell of a lot better than their first.
Love all their music!Love all their cds
think it is wonderful to see musicians show the full range of
their creativity…..you cannot compare the albums aga eachother because the first two cds are a complete different genre of music
dosen’t mean they suck ass just means its not for you
personally.
Dan, you’re crazy. Aha Shake Heartbreak is their best album. You obviously are a new fan. Re-listening to it and stop being KOL-ignorant.
It’s opinion mate. Don’t go around bashing others just ’cause you don’t agree with them, aye?
Damn this album.
Dan…youre obviously a new fan…the ones that even the band say they dont like! Their 1st 3 albums are superb…then it all went downhill from there…and thats a fact my friends.
KOL are literally a different band than they were in 2003 (EP release). Then again aren’t we all different after the passing of 7 years! In the early 2000’s I had a severe addiction to all things Vodka. Now I tuck my seven month old into her crib. That caterpillar sure will turn into a butterfly, right? But what the hell these guys used to rock. It was music you could fuck to (might explain the baby!). This new album is the sound track to an 8th grade hand holding dance. I saw these guys at the Troc or the Electric Factory – I can’t remember which small venue in Philly – around 2005. I remember watching the young Followill brother play lead guitar and I thought “Jesus, this guy has a flame-thrower for a right hand”. I mean, he was going to be a Rock Guitar King. Where are the guitars on this album? How does a guitarist take such a large step into the background? Hey, I’m all for exploring new sounds and new directions but I’m never going to mate with an orange. They are simply not a rock band anymore. It’s like pop music with the slightest of edges. I’m sad, I’m blue I miss what I wanted KOL to be. Then again rock bands don’t plan their careers after what I want. Cool with that. Then again I’m listening to the new Black Mountain album instead.
i was kinda looking forward for a few of great solo’s from matt, big let down in that department! calebs voice will still attract the masses gained from the last album, so will songs like the immortals and pickup truck! love the end of back down south, listen to it!
To bc: that was possibly the best thing ive read all day, and the most accurate.
As a fan of the first 3 albums, the last one being a complete cancer on music, i have to say that I lost all respect and hope in Kol. But I have to say that this is a very very good album. Im very happy listening to it. Its like discovering a new band. Cos the last one they hadnt a clue what they were doing, but they seem to have found their direction with this, and it aint that bad a path to go down. It may not be my style anymore, but its still good. Quite good. But i suppose an album of white noise would be better than the last one
i’m a huge fan of KOL, first i had a crush on their first 3 albums (Charmer, Camaro <3) and i couldn't believe it was actually them releasing the 'Use somebody' single. anyway, i kinda liked it. I figure i like most of their songs so i was super excited about the new album and i bought it the very first day. it was kinda strange, though, when i listened to in for the first time i didn't get the tiniest goosebump which i would get listening to any other KOL song. I like the new album, love the older ones. I think Come around sundown is more like backgroud music with no real click to it….i can't really explain… i used to get my hair standing just listening to the raw sound and i got my hair standing when i bought the new record and then…nothing…. a flick of disappointment and fast forward to the next song, the next brief background music… no edge, no excitement, no goosebumps….. daaarghhh… i hope they play the old albums on the Bologna Concert when i'm going, listening them live for the first time aaah so excited…
While there might be some U2 guitar delays that sneaked into the album it definitely doesn’t resemble or sound like any of U2′s albums.
I think that the guys are maturing/evolving from rock’n'roll to rock,
This might disappoint some but they are improving from one album, to another.
IMO come around sundown is their best so far even if it does not includes top hits such as sex on fire. In fact radioactive seems to be trying to replicate SOF (similar guitar riff) but it fails and moreover probably the worst song in the album.
I think the guys were pushed by their label to generate another SOF but their effort failed. This might be the only explanation for releasing it as the first single.
Cheers.
I miss them, They are a new band, I miss the screams, the guitar shouts i miss their power and real sound, They are gaining new fans, but they are loosing the real ones. The first album was crazy, awsome. The second was also good, the third were more powerfull and a little bit more thinked, the four one was the beginning of the end, a few good songs but that was it, and this….. this a good reason to cry.Hate the music industry, it can really steall the soul from the bands… what a pitty
music appreciation, so what they have change, just listen to the music don’t get wrapped up in the difference of albums if they stayed the same how would anything they do be NEW it would just go around in circles people change, music changes but the love should never change listen to the album again from and uncomparative mindset just listen to it for what it is and maybe you will change your mind.
The Kings know what they’re doing and they’re good at it. If you don’t like it, stop wasting space here and go listen to something you like. Please and thank you.
XOXO,
Erin
at least they did a guitar solo on a song(mary) haven’t heard them solo on any of their other albums, and Only By The Night was a good album in my opinion. Yeah the first few albums had a handful of good songs, but i thought almost every song on the Only By The Night album was good, but it could have added some charmer type songs to have made it a killer album.
