Joshua Homme: “It Doesn’t Matter If It’s Been Said, It’s Never Been Said By Me”

Sunday mornings are good for catching up on stuff we may have missed throughout the week while grinding away at our day jobs or reading Kanye’s latest tweet rants. Perhaps we’ll make a habit of this.

This week we’re tossing up a video interview between the BBC’s Zane Lowe and Queens Of The Stone Age frontman Joshua Homme from the Reading Festival on Aug 27, which made the rounds earlier this week by music blogs scrambling to harvest clicks off the fact that Josh mentioned ex-Queens bassist Nick Oliveri a few times throughout the 27-minute video.

He’s not coming back, guys. Let it go. Let’s move on.

What most publications failed to mention is that the interview is also a massively inspiring inside-look recounting of Queens’ history, troubles, trials and tribulations as the key players moved from the generator parties of the desert to stages around the world. Josh talks about his upbringing, his philosophy on music, his methods for quality control within QOTSA and much, much more.

It’s hands down the best video interview we’ve ever seen with Josh – yes, even better than our own. Grab a relaxing concoction and get ready to understand why this man may as well be Antiquiet’s mascot.

Queens Of The Stone Age have announced plans to kick our asses with nostalgia this fall with the reissue of their self-titled debut album, which is a bitch to find on vinyl these days.

The album is being released by Homme’s Rekords Rekords, which has also announced the release of Alain Johannes’ Spark (Oct. 5) and Mini Mansions self-titled debut (Nov. 2). It’s been recreated by Homme as it was initially envisioned, with three tracks that were initially cut from the record finding their way back into the mix.

Queens Of The Stone Age will be reissued on Black Friday (Nov. 26) as a 180 gram double-gatefold, colored vinyl release packaged with a CD version. The CD arrives in stores on Dec. 7.

ah wonderful, wish they would put out a new record instead of re-releasing old material. Guess its the way the record business works today, seems like everyone is re-releasing some album and throwing in a couple bonus tracks. anyways that was a great interview.

  • Rory says:

It’s actually kind of nice they are rereleasing their self titled album Raina…since you can’t get it anywhere. Of course it will never be an “original” copy…

I found a copy of the CD a while ago…all the liner notes were in Spanish.

As for the interview. Thank you. So many quotable moments.

    • Raina says:

Well if you put it that way Rory it makes sense why they would re-release the first record. My husband put out about $60 for their first record for me (bday present) and it was not an easy find at all. Think he got it on ebay so I guess thats cool it’ll be more available. Great interview, really like how he mentions he thinks lullabies is better than deaf. Both records are great but I was always a lil more impressed with lullabies’.

    • blind marvin says:

wait…all of the liner notes on my copy are in Spanish as well! I had assumed that was the case for all the original copies! Is this not the case?

      • blind marvin says:

also I should add that I bought my copy (as well as rated r) for like five bucks at a used record store!

  • Mike says:

    Awesome.

First: Listen, I don’t care if Nick returns. I’ve always loved whatever comes out of the Queens moniker. It’s sort of like being a Steelers fan. The players change but I keep rooting for the team. Am I just a fan of the Jersey’s? Of course not – somehow the changing cast (of both groups) is always so great – I keep coming back for more.
Second: I wouldn’t say Nick is never coming back. I mean, Josh says Nick is the world’s greatest second mate. Once you say you will swashbuckle with someone it’s never over. I’m in my mid-thirties and I’ve certainly re-kindled relationships with people I thought I would never re-friend again. Life is often a big circle – things go round-n-round and sometimes you get back to the beginning to start something new.
Third: Most prophetic statement in the interview: “Were gonna go to the middle of nowhere and just be a band for a while.” Yes! So awesome. I’ve always felt bands get lame by the 4th, 5th albums because they lose their ‘bandness’ and they turn into some kind of company or job. Bro, bands gotta stay friends have experiences together, practice, talk, just be a band. It sounds like The Big Man wants to start again. If The Animal showed up again on a new album, I for one, would not be shocked. Then again maybe I’m just projecting my own thoughts onto his group. As Josh says “(I) don’t know him.” Then again as Josh also says does anyone know themselves?

  • Great interview, though he clears out that there will be no new record anytime soon (or at least that’s what I understood). Now the good thing about Queens is that I don’t get tired of listening to their albums, so it’s always nice to back to the one you haven’t heard in a while and find out some sounds and structures you were missing before. So it’s fine by me if they don’t release a new album any time soon, ’cause there are 5 albums to go back to.

Thanks! – very cool interview, definitely one of the best that I’ve seen.

One thing though: no mention of what’s happening with Crooked Vultures?
At the end of last year, Grohl said they were working on a second record, and a few months later , JPJ said it would be done at the end of summer.
And here we are, end of summer, we have a super-long interview with Josh and the words “Them Crooked Vultures” are not even uttered. Not once.
    Don’t you think that’s a little strange?

  • hashitan says:

It was indeed a great interview. Thanks for posing.
I love the “Lullabies.” I still can’t get enough of it. I feel it is extremely underrated. So it was delightful to hear from his mouth that he considers it’s better record than the “Deaf.” Many fans in Japan seems to think the “Deaf” was the golden age and how they miss that line-up. I disagree. It’s gotten better. I don’t miss Nick at all.

  • loonypalooza says:

Amazing interview, its nice to see Homme talk about the whole Castillo/Grohl debate. Too many people argue over that shit and forget about the music. I can’t say I miss Nick, he was great, but the band has continued to make amazing music and their live performances get better with every lineup change. Furthermore, it’s nice to see that someone still cares about the music; you can tell that Homme cares by re-mastering and re-releasing the debut album. It’s not being done just to make a quick buck, it’s being done so that people who never got the chance to own the record can hear the masterpieces that started it all. Thank you Homme, you are one of the most respectable artists out there. I wish I could actually know you, so that I actually could understand the reasons why you do things the way you do. Long live the Queens!
