News:  Nine Inch Nails

Reznor & Ross Take ‘Hand Covers Bruise’ To The Movies

By Johnny Firecloud

The two hour Facebook ad The Social Network will hit theaters in a month and a day, and now you can listen to some “music” from the score of the film, courtesy of Trent Reznor and his longtime musical collaborator Atticus Ross.

Just don’t expect actual music as you listen to Hand Covers Bruise:

Sure, what you hear above is four and a half minutes of otherwise useless noise. But director David Fincher undoubtedly made a wise choice in Reznor to convey the reportedly dark and pensive undercurrents of the film, as that’s an area in which the Nine Inch Nails mastermind has no equal. Here’s hoping we’ll hear a little music through the noise at some point, however.

Thanks to OneThirtyBPM for the find!

I’m just trying to envision how this will translate on film. It should be interesting.

“Useless noise”, huh? I guess we were expecting facebook-themed club bangers..?

“useless noise”, honestly what did you expect?, since its a film score its most likely just going to be mood music, I really doubt we’re going to hear his voice in any of this

Love it, I can see see how this would fit in a David Fincher movie.

    what was this post about?

Useless noise? This is atmospheric music for a film. Not all music requires drumbeats and verse-chorus-verse, especially in a movie.

If you’ve ever seen a David Fincher film, you’ll see how well this type of score will fit in.

  10. How dare you just call this “useless noise”. – Have you ever listened to movie score soundtrack by itself? #JustSayin

Woah… Firecloud! Do you starred some low budget sci-fi movie in the 60′s? XDDD

Not exactly Nine Inch Nails, and not really a song, but the sound is very Trent Reznor-ish. Somewhere between the Ghosts album and Another Version Of the Truth, I think. I like it.

    Fucking superfans.

I hate music sites that allow the administrators to post kiss-ass posts under falsified handles too.

  14. Its what I’d expect from Trent. Very ambiant, dark, strange. And with every new work Trent always adds a new essense to it while staying true to his nature. I’m looking forward to the release of Social netword score soundtrack. He never disappoints his true fans. Whoever called this “useless noise” has a very limited perception of what music and art really is. I suppose that person probably expects to be able to dance to something in order to compliment it. This track is ambiant. People who have perceptive imaginations can tune right in to it. It eminates an abstract mood. Shallow minds usually need a beat, catchy rhythm, and some lyrics of a superficial quality for them to bob their heads to. Why would someone like that even listen to a piece by Trent Reznor (Nine inch nails). There’s nothing shallow or simple about trent’s work. That person who called this useless noise should just go listen to their local pop station and stick to what they know.

    • I just read the post again, and realized it was the moderator who Said “useless noise”. I’ll have to correct at least part of what I said above. I thought it was a visitor who posted the useless noise comment. First of all my partial apologies for my criticism, the moderator did give compliment after that statement so my harsh criticism I will retract, I still don’t understand however, why this person used the word “useless”, to describe the noise. It could be perceived as noise, but understanding the nature of Trent’s styles and methods of work, its anything but useless. It eminates a mood, an atmosphere. If a visitor to this site thinks of it as useless noise, they can just go back from where they came. Art like this shouldn’t be wasted on such obtuse individuals. It’s almost like the moderator is trying to defend the song from people who would see it as useless noise. I say again, if the visitor to this page thinks of it as such, then they’re to obtuse to appreciate it, and not worth trying to explain. But perhaps I’m being to caustic, and petulant. I would like to say sorry for the harsh critism, and thank you for posting this track. I was glad to get a preview of the soundtrack.

      • It serves the purpose intended for the film, I’m sure – as I stated in so many words within the piece. Would you ever in your life be enthusiastic about listening to this if it were coming out of your speakers with no context at all? Most would say no. A very high percentage of those saying yes are NINgoblins who would follow Reznor through fire. We don’t have to put on airs like we’re debating high art – it’s perfectly fine and fitting for what it is, but it’s *otherwise* useless noise.

        • ZombieStardust says:

Off topic, but I just have to ask whether you invented the term “NINgoblins”? It is quite possibly the most awesome name for a group of fans that I have ever heard.

i don’t know man… there is a niche of people who like this kind of stuff. no real beat, dramatic, haunting, minimal. it isn’t like you’ve never heard a piece of music like this before. sure, most of it is created for things like movie scores, but isn’t it at least a -little- narrow-minded to think -nobody- listens to this kind of music just because? in the same way anybody else listens to any other genre? now, i’m not dissing a good dance beat or the “verse-chorus-bridge” standard, even artists like reznor use them. and i agree about ningoblins deifying and following rezzo through fire and whatnot… but he isn’t the only guy to ever record pieces like this, and that’s because _someone_ wants to listen to them. rezzo didn’t start it and he likely won’t finish it, so it isn’t really fair to support your point of it being “otherwise useless noise” by pointing out that there is a group with 100% loyalty to reznor. people have created, released, and bought cds with music of this nature on them with no outside tie-ins. you could argue that the people who like this kind of music on its own only like it because it reminds them of movie scores, but what difference does that make? that means there’s still a niche market for music of this nature outside of film scores and video games, and reznor. to someone, it has purpose outside of adding emotion to pictures. it contains emotion on its own. …but i’m not saying you have to like the piece, or even find it interesting, i’m just saying that nothing is so black and white. some people just like music, period. hell, some people just like noise. and my point is, no matter how few in number, if they like it, or if it moves them, or if it makes them think, it isn’t useless. i feel, regardless of your off-hand comment, that you realize this. my comment was more for me than for you. i can admit that. keep up the good work buddy.

        • not-a-NINgoblin says:

I’m certainly not a NINgoblin, although I do like most musical things coming from the mind of Trent Reznor. Your musical tastes are obviously fairly narrow. Your “useless noise” is another’s “atmospheric ambient”. Frankly, yes I would be enthusiastic about listening to this – while coding, painting, meditating or anything where I’d like something for atmosphere, but not something that takes my attention away from what I’m doing.

Trent doesn’t do this sort of thing often – the Quake soundtrack, A Warm Place, certain tracks on Ghosts, etc… and it’s a shame, because he does it far better than most “ambient” artists. Easily on par and in some cases better than Aphex Twin / Richard D. James.
