Watch Slipknot Frontman Corey Taylor Cover Tom Petty
Slipknot/Stone Sour frontman Corey Taylor is one man we wouldn’t want to piss off, so it’s an odd feeling that rises inside when the dual-duty vocalist takes off the mask, stops screaming and instead grabs a guitar to tear off an earnest and kickass Tom Petty cover.

Taylor hopped on the Gibson Tour Bus at this year’s Sonisphere Festival last weekend at Knebworth, and decided to play an impromptu version of You Got Lucky for rolling cameras. He could’ve parodied the song into tongue-in-cheek ego strokage, but instead delivered a heartfelt performance that’s far unlike the wailing intimidation he presents with Slipknot. Thumbs up on this one.

this is awesome.
The fact that you’re surprised to hear him sing and not scream suggests you haven’t been paying attention to Taylor in recent years. Even Slipknot are much more mainstream/streamlined now than in their earlier days, with ballads and all. I’d actually go so far as to say they’ve evolved into a very good rock/metal group, from the caricature they started out as.
Don’t believe me? Listen to the “Vermilion” songs, 1 and 2, or “Snuff” and “Gehenna” from their last album. Or Corey’s “Bother” from some Spider Man soundtrack years ago. Whatever you think of those songs, it shouldn’t be a surprise to hear him in melodious form.
@ Kristján Atli – Bother is actually from the first Stone Sour album (2002, self-titled). Personally I think SS are sooo much better than Slipknot, but I also think Slipknot’s old albums (Slipknot and Iowa) are better than the recent one.
