Street Sweeper Wants To Bang Bang Bang And Take Your Money

Well, it’s a slow news day folks, but rather than post the picture of Ke$ha naked and covered in jism, we found a song to share: Street Sweeper Social Club’s cover of M.I.A.’s bootlegged Clash song Paper Planes.
As cool as Tom Morello is, Boots Riley just ain’t no Zack De La Rocha, you know? At least they’re actually playing the riffs, rather than just copy and pasting. And there’s a sorta creative little bridge in this version… But somehow, it lacks the punch of M.I.A.’s version, let alone anything by Morello’s most famous project, let alone Straight To Hell.
This track will be on a new Street Sweeper EP entitled Ghetto Blaster, due out August 10th. More details here.
And speaking of M.I.A., her new album /\/\/\Y/\ is now streaming in its entirety over on her shitty MySpace page.
This is unbelievably bad.

It’s not “rage”, it’s “social”. I had no clue who this M.I.A. person was before this morning, and thought that when SSSC played this at that fateful NINJA show last year, it was good then. It’s good now.

I heard they re-united in ATL not long ago. Can I count on a damn fine review of their new material on antiquiet if they release some?
I like this. I always liked the M.I.A. song, and people always hated on me for it. I like this one better AND it’s not as embarrassing to listen to.
I am going to lean towards the haters on this one. Boots Riley is nothing special. When I saw them at Coachella I thought he was a great performer but lacked chops. They played this song there and it was underwhelming.
I love Morello and want SSSC to be good, but often. like this cover, they are a bit of a let down.
Now try and imagine a rendition from Zack & DJ Shadow….THAT would be bad ass… This one, nah, I’ll pass….

I don’t really care if they’re not quite as good as RATM. In fact, I’d be pretty disappointed if they sounded exactly like them. The fact is that Tom’s unique guitar sounds combined with political rap/rock is such a unique style that it NEEDS to continue to find an outlet, no matter what.
