Maynard James Keenan And Elton John Climb Into A Rocket…
By Johnny Firecloud
Sunday, July 4, 2010
It’s always a good day when a new song from Maynard James Keenan arrives, whether through Tool, A Perfect Circle or his most shits-and-giggles collaborative project, Puscifer.
This time around it’s the latter headlining a song that should be familiar to us all – Elton John’s ode to orbital loneliness, Rocket Man:
Officially credited to Puscifer & Steven Drozd (Flaming Lips’ lead guitarist) and dubbed Rocket Mantastic, the cover is a beautiful rendition of the 1972 classic. While the song appeared on Puscifer setlists last year – including the Los Angeles Nokia show we attended – the recording is attached to Christopher Pomerenke’s cheap music documentary The Heart Is A Drum Machine, in which Keenan appears for roughly 15 seconds – staring at the camera and not saying a word. You’re certainly not missing out if you haven’t seen the film; it’s poorly made and difficult to sit through. What’s more – the song’s not even in the damn thing.
But now you have it, here and autoplaying on Puscifer.com.
In more Maynard news, not only is Tool working on a new album, but we recently got the scoop on new activity with A Perfect Circle as well. Exciting times!

Saw him do this at Nokia last year. Get chills thinking about it. The new Perfect Circle scoop is the best thing I’ve heard all day!
Boner.
Great cover.
great cover…but even greater pic..WESTSIDE!!
Big fan of that guy but this cover isn’t good at all, much more emotion in Elton’s version but I like only few covers maybe that’s why.
Not that great, I love the way My Morning Jacket covered it.
Oh man, My Morning Jacket’s cover is really really goooood, but you know, one song, two different angles. I like this one too. Great find!
as much as i dig tool and apc, puscifer does nothing for me. and this cover is kinda awkward.
??auto-tune??
I’ve long suspected Maynard of using autotune in his Puscifer work, most notably Lighten Up, Francis. Maybe not your typical T Pain autotune, but there’s definitely some pitch shifting going on in a lot of his stuff. Oh well, no matter. He’s been using effects on his voice since even Tool, and it still sounds good.
There’s a difference between putting effects on a voice and using auto-tune. The last thing Maynard needs is any pitch-shifting.

This song lacks slack. Wotan does not approve.

…MJK puts his soul into every song … this one is no exception ..BRAVO i say !
[...] haven’t caught the film just yet, but Antiquiet says it was a bit underwhelming and I tend to agree with those dudes (not to mention the cover [...]
