Pearl Jam Kicks It With Them Crooked Vultures

By Johnny Firecloud

Pearl Jam closed out Belgium’s Rock Werchter 2010 festival yesterday with a little help from some feathered friends. As the final closer of a set that included an unreleased new song and covers of Joe Strummer (Arms Aloft) and Public Image Ltd. (Public Image), the guys brought out half of Them Crooked Vultures – drummer Dave Grohl and guitarist Alain Johannes – for a searingly celebratory version of Kick Out The Jams by MC5.

The performance was a thrilling collaborative dose that found Grohl cheerfully smashing tambourines next to drummer Matt Cameron as Johannes (who’s about to launch his own solo album) shreds next to lead guitarist Mike McCready. It was sloppy and the sound on the video may be shite, but the energy and enthusiasm more than makes up for any lack of finesse in execution.

UPDATED: Better quality video!

Thanks Ryanne, Koen and DopeySpawn for taping!

Don’t these european festivals usually get pro-quality audio recorded?? Not bad though!

I had to watch this on mute. I have no idea if the song was any good or not.

swapped the video for one with better audio.

Certainly my favourite european festival, still trying to digest that I’ve missed this year’s.
Reminds of the RW 2007 when PJ invited Josh Homme on stage and Vedder started complaining about the mystery “pills” that he got from Homme.
Apparently he was struggling to keep the pace…
