News: Pearl Jam
And Here’s Another New Pearl Jam Song
Today at a live show in Dublin, Pearl Jam debuted a new song called Of The Earth.
If you thought Better Days (the track that leaked a couple of weeks back) was a little on the sissy side for your taste, get a load of this screaming mortar shell, which was recorded and put online by fans within hours of the performance:
Originally written and recorded during the self-titled “Avocado” album sessions, Of The Earth was recently re-recorded during the Backspacer sessions, yet only slipped out to close personal friends as a preview of the new material.
Meanwhile, Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Better Days is actually an Eddie Vedder solo track that’s headed for the soundtrack for the movie Eat, Pray, Love.
Thanks to all the Pearl Jam fans that sent in heads-ups in the past, oh, 15 minutes!

if they’ve been making music like this…WHY THE FUCK HAVENT THEY BEEN PUTTING IT OUT. I really hope they just needed to get the punk/pop out of them and will go back to what they’re great at. This should be what they sound like from now on.
Absolutely fantastic. Sounds a lot like Ten, but that’s not a bad thing.
I’m a big fan, but I am not digging Backspacer at all.
I think that some of Backspacer was okay, and as far as I’m concerned, Ed had a damn cold when he recorded “Just Breathe”. It prompted me to improvise to the instrumentals of Just Breathe to sing about how he shouldn’t have recorded it while he had a cold. Let’s see some more Ten style stuff, Come on guys! This is damn good. Ed is one of the most talented song writers I come across, and in my humble opinion, you can do better than Backspacer.
What a fucking howler. This sounds like something I should be listening to while trudging through a swamp with 100lb pack on. I would be okay with this sound coming from Pearl Jam on a new album. It was good to see them happy on Backspacer but Jesus can Ed write a song when he’s pissed off.
sounds great
Amazing song! Can’t wait to hear the studio version!
Great track! They need to write and record more music while stoned. I’d love a new Pearl Jam album with this sound.
If the new material sounds anything like these latest two songs, my faith is restored in my boys. Backspacer was good, but it has very little listening longevity.
Epic.
I could get used to this. A new Pearl Jam / Vedder track every 2 weeks? Sign me up!
Dear Peal Jam: You suck. Come home soon. Love, me.
it really is sad sat on this song for so long. it wouldn’t fit Backspacer? Its much better than anything on that album. and there’s more outtakes the same sessions.
Also it upsets that Matt will be leaving for the lesser reunion in Soundgarden. That band is pretty inferior to what PJ has accomplished in the last 12 years alone.
I doubt Matt is leaving PJ, just reuniting with Soundgarden. There is plenty of room for him to do both.
All we can do now is pray that the studio version doesn’t trim down this 7 minute jam to a concise 3. No fixin’ please.
That shit is DAMN good!, i want the studio version NOW!

( I didn’t mean to post this twice, I didn’t realize I was replying to “T” ‘s comment)
This shit made me laugh righteously. And in a way, I agree with you.
glad you got my headup ;-)
Haven’t listened to the boot yet, just got home from Belfast. The song was amazing, loud, heavy, hardhitting, passionnate. Everything Backspacer wasn’t.
wow…….WTF?? Most people on this post have NO IDEA what they are talking about. Backspacer was PJ’s first album to go #1 on bilboard in 14 years. Not from “No Code” has PJ released a more diverse and “real” album. I would imagine that most people on here also need a lot of Brokheimer movies as opposed to anything with a story that requires any actual thought. Do Pearl Jam a favor, go back to your hillbilly roots, and break out your Guns and Roses albums and leave good music for the smart people.
first off, since when does commercial success quantify quality? second, cough * exclusive retail deal with target * cough * ahem. sorry, what?
dude, you just dismissed his point about commercial viability with a comment on a commercial move that had absolutely nothing to do with the music. Although he is wrong, there’s nothing “real” with unthought known, that could be a fucking jason derulo song if it had a dance beat.
two comments to make one point: commercial success doesn’t make the music good. first, because it just never has, second, because in this case, commercial success was helped a great deal by unusually high retail visibility.
What the f*** is goddamn right. Backspacer was, for the first time, something the likes of Ten and Vitalogy. Pear Jam has always been excessive, allowing themselves more introspection and emotional resonance, with Ed exploring both sides of the human condition, both white and gray. Backspacer was Ed setting himself customarily free as he’s done before, an unconquerable, indomitable rock-soul for the people.
Anyone know where I can download this ?
People can say what they what about any of Pearl Jam’s albums, this is good just as Backspacer was good. The best thing about Eddie’s vocals is he can be mellow and from the heart to scream in your face! There is nothing I have ever heard him say or sing that is not REAL! I have followed him from his early years to his solo albums, say what you will but when he opens his mouth EVERYONE listens!
Eddie Vedder could burp into a microphone for 4 hours and I would buy the album! You’re absolutely right! You have no choice but to listen when it come to EV. I don’t think there has EVER been a PJ song or album that I didn’t like, every song has spoken to some area of my life. There has never and will never be a band as talented and diverse as PJ!
maybe all you Backspacer haters missed Unthought Known? That’s one amazing song. If you havnt heard it yet do yourself a favor
You can’t argue someone into liking an album they hate. Me, I enjoyed Backspacer a lot, and I felt that parts of it harkened back to the band’s roots. The parts that didn’t were more of the introspective and melodic material we’ve heard from PJ over the last decade.
But I get that some people hated it. There’s no accounting for preference, especially when it comes to something as aesthetic as music.
This live version of “Of the Earth” sounds intense and the 3 minute jam out in the middle is perfect and unique because they usually jam out towards the end of songs and Mike is primarily soloing, but here we get three guitars bass and drums all working , synchronizing and crossfiring together. And this type of mutual contribution is the Hallmark, I believe, of this legendary group.
I agree with a lot of fans here, in that Backspacer is a weak album. I have never been able to identify my ‘least favorite’ pearl jam record, but Backspacer is my least favorite out of their nine studio records. I have trouble listening to “just breathe,” it is lacks any passion in my mind. I realize that they wanted to make a short record, but the dualing guitars of stone and mike coupled with jeffs bass and Matt’s tight clever drum fills are absent on Backspace, which I believe is the pearl jam signature mechanism. Ed is getting older and his voice is not as crisp and clear as it once was and he has trouble hitting some of the higher notes which were in his range years ago. His voice sounds better on every other record, even on the under rated “Riot-Act” which I believe is the bands best record after “yield”
Backspacer isn’t aweful, buts its mediocre. I believe that it lacks depth and imagination, and the artwork is strange and confusing, It the worst art-work the band has had. Sorry, Tom Tommorrow, your cartoons are good looking but they don’t fit a pearl jam record. The artwook is nothing more than a children’s coloring book/
So ya, “Of the Earth” has grit immagination and desire and would have been a better track for “Backspacer” or “Avacado.” Lets hope pearl jam returns to formula on the next effort.
I like this song is simply amazing
The song was mint, wow it was really good, they’ve been keeping that post 80′s sound that made them famous
all u hating on backspacer are nuts. is there something wrong with writing some joyous songs? every song on the album is very good. the music that they write is where they are in their lives, growing up, maturing, evolving….enjoy it. “unthought known” is as good as it gets, feel the sky blanket you with gems and rhinestones!!!!!!!
i want new PJ, i need new PJ, I must have new PJ
