News: The Dead Weather
Light A Match, Watch It Burn
The Dead Weather‘s impending May 11 release of Sea of Cowards, their sophomore effort, is looking more and more like a force to be reckoned with as new material continues to trickle in.
The band’s Coachella performance yielded an assortment of new songs, but now we have a finished studio version of a track so dirty and delicious our hopes & expectations for the new album have been buoyed to dizzying heights.
Organ-driven and built on a dark-carnival stench of inevitable danger, Gasoline is a new high watermark for TDW. A squealing guitar lead vies for airtime with tigress/frontchick Alison Mosshart’s utterly possessed vocals, for a sound not unlike Icky Thump-era White Stripes.
Update: Hey, whaddya know, they’ve got a video for the song as well.
They’re currently on tour, and if you’re in the Southern lands in the next week or so, make sure to catch this musical molotov cocktail. You’ll thank us.

They played this last night in Tulsa. It was fantastic. If anyone in that theater wasn’t excited for Sea of Cowards, they are now.
That is some good shit
Instant classic…Sea of Cowards will kill. TDW rules.
Jack White = King Midas.
This track is complete killer! Those guitar solos are being played by Jack however, not Dean. Jack was in the Vault chatroom with some fans a couple of weeks ago and previewed this song for us. When asked who was ripping those solos he admitted it was him. Dean is leading this glorious chaos on organ throughout. I CANNOT WAIT TO GET MY HANDS ON THIS ALBUM!
I badly wanted to call out the Jack/guitar connection in the song but didn’t want to be called a Jack fanboi. Serves me right for not owning up to it.
It’s pretty obvious IMO throughout the first record. Jack is playing guitar, singing and playing drums. So many parts sound specifically like Jack. In fact, listen to Allison’s vocal on this song – same compression and other vocal effects that Jack uses for his own vocals. Yeah, so let’s just admit it. Just like his other bands, this band is Jack White + accessory musicians…albeit really really kick-ass accessory musicians (same with Raconteurs, although there was more varied input from the band with the Racs). And Jack White continues to be awesome.
Alison is quickly becoming one of my favorite vocalists ever. I love her voice and the raw energy in it.
yeah, she’s been writing good lyrics too. i didn’t care for the kills, but she’s really been winning me over to the dead weather bandwagon, as much as jack.
WOW! This is a great tune. Can’t wait to cruise down to Third Man and pick this up on vinyl.
Oh Fuh-king yeah!
In response to jack project + accessorie, I wouldn’t quite agree with that. This song is clearly a Jack solo, or at least in his style, but the ones on horehound were completely out of his usual element. There was a lot more feedback, a heavy use of effects, and less of a reliance on Jacks typically fast fingering of blues scales.
In addition to that…my god, that solo.
Yeah I forgot to comment on that earlier. Don’t agree with furiousgeorge all. You can say that about the White Stripes, and you can make a case for it with the Raconteurs but not about The Dead Weather. Everything is just so different. In a good way. And as far as I can tell Alison is the one that pens the vocals. Its a team effort and it shows.
Great tune! These guys are on a creative high right now. And our boy Johnny has been posting non-stop this last week! Alright!
