Ready for some new Blur?

Here’s a great quality radio rip of Fools Day, the first new Blur song anyone’s heard in seven years. Enjoy!

The song, which centers on a gentle, stony melody not outside the range of earlier Gorillaz material, was written earlier this month & released for Record Store Day, which happens to be today. There will only be 1,000 limited edition 7″ vinyl singles sold at 150 participation music shops in the UK, so for fans outside the British borders this is, for now, the only way to hear the song.

“We want independent record stores to continue — they’re an important part of our musical culture,” singer Damon Albarn said in a statement. “Music is a simple way for Blur to show our support and we hope people will like it.”

UPDATE: You can download the track for free from the band’s official site.

Love it! A bit Coffee & TV, a bit Blue Jeans, a bit Think Tank. I know that this is gonna be in my head all weekend! Funny that I had to cyber-travel all the way to the USA to hear this, when I live just a few miles from Damon’s Devon pad! His local record store did not get the song, even though they were participating in Record Store Day.

Damon’s lyric and vocals seem a bit banal (a-la Blue Jeans, as noted earlier) but the melodic delivery gives it an endearing poppy glow. Can’t wait to hear a better quality version of the song to hear Alex’s bass work a little clearer. The biggest impression the song makes is at the end: Graham is back!

One listen in and i’m digging it. I need to find that No Distance Left To Run documentary. Too expensive to import, anyone have any other *ahem* alternatives?

  • [...] AntiQuiet posted a radio rip of the song that was (by the sounds of it) ripped from a U.K. radio show this morning, but  Blur have since announced that they’re going to release the song as a free digital download at midnight U.K. time (7pm EST). Download the “Fool’s Day” radio rip below and head over to their official site tonight to download the good version.    "Blur – Fools Day": [...]

Between getting Slash’s autograph at Amoeba in Hollywood today and this news, I feel like it’s 1993 all over again.

I love Blur, and obviously (yes, I wrote “obviously”) Albarn is a musical genius, but I’m not really sold on this one. It’s alright.

Personally, I think it’s rather fantastic. Especially as they haven’t composed together in quite awhile.

  • [...] Since many musicians grew up in such boutiques and, not to mention, appreciate the idea of people paying for their music, tons of big names help out with the festivities by issuing special vinyl records; this year is no exception, and there is a ton of great wax to collect. A few of the highlights include: a double LP of Pavement’s recent Quarantine the Past compilation that even has a different track listing (now Pavement psychos can argue which is better), a sea foam green vinyl of the Flaming Lips cover of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, a vinyl reissue of Modest Mouse’s The Moon and Antarctica, the Hold Steady’s new LP Heaven is Whenever, a 12” of LCD Soundsystem’s new single “Pow Wow,” and get this, a 7” of Blur’s new single “Fool’s Day.” [...]
