The next installment of Beck’s ambitious Record Club series (in which the idiosyncratic artist recruits an assortment of musical friends to cover an entire album) will feature an end-to-end cover of the classic INXS album Kick. A fascinating little assortment of players, from Annie Clark (aka St. Vincent) & the current lineup of Os Mutantes to the Liars, are on board for the project.
Previously, the Record Club parties have covered such gems as the Velvet Underground’s first album and Skip Spence’s Oar. Kick marks the first time they’ve fully embraced ’80s cheesepop, and from what we’ve seen so far, things are looking promising…
Check out the first track on the album, Guns In The Sky:
The concept of Beck playing captain to a patchwork quilt of musicians covering the entirety of such an iconic ’80s album is a thrilling one for anyone who was a kid during the time, for anyone who actually remembers the short-lived sex-taboo power behind Devil Inside, the ridiculously celebratory New Sensation and, of course, the melodramatic sexual immersion of Never Tear Us Apart. If you’ve seen an Electric Six show in the past couple years, you’ve likely borne witness to their hilariously deadpan cover of the track.
Whatever your affiliation with the ’80s, this project is bound to produce some very interesting sounds. Perhaps the surviving members of INXS could’ve saved themselves the humiliation of that ill-fated reality show to find a replacement singer and gone with Beck instead. More on this as it develops.

wow, that cat got out of the bag quick! I, too, tried to check out the video right after it was posted and couldn’t. :(
The video is still running here : http://musicforperfectpeople.wordpress.com/2010/03/18/beck-st-vincent-liars-and-os-mutantes-record-inxs-cover/
I don’t know, cover here or there is cool, but covering whole album ? It looks like desperate idea and running of songwriting idea, considering the fact that “Kick” is example of perfect songwriting blending so many styles from Rolling Stones alike guitars to alternative pop-dance. I hate such ideas some great albums should left where they belong, what’s next Jaz-Z covering whole Appetite for Destruction ?
Deftones doing their version of Paranoid ?
One of the becks album from INXS if not the best.
I hope it aint a copycat of INXS work, with nothing to add to the adventure of making a new twist of this album.
To say the truth Peter, is not a bad idea making a whole tribute from a landmark album, but if this is going to be a carbon copy THEN everyone should boo this!..we wont loose our time to hear REPETITITIOUS RIP OFFS.
PLEASE Beck..is a good idea and a fantastic album from INXS. Surprise everyone!!!
