Them Crooked Vultures played Saturday Night Live tonight, as planned. It literally just happened, so it won’t air on the West coast for another few hours. But here it is, in its Saturday night glory:

Semi-related trivia: Did you know that turkey vultures are known for their defensive tactic of vomiting?

Come back next weekend, and we’ll have the Vultures’ complete performance on the legendary Austin City Limits TV show, taped while we were in town for ACL and the first-ever Them Crooked Vultures interview with frontman Josh Homme. Here’s a clip of New Fang from the ACL set:

Thanks to our buddy The Audio Perv for the SNL rips.

Great performance last night. JPJ looked like he was having a blast.

  • Lara says:

I love these guys an insane amount. Cheers for the clips Johnny.

  • ken says:

Did Josh seem sick for the SNL performance? I feel like his singing wasn’t quite what we’ve come to expect from other shows.

  • Jeff says:

Thanks for the upload! Fell asleep watching a movie and missed it….

  • El Andy says:

They sounded pretty good, but suffered from a predictable, boring set list.

  • Porkspam says:

thank god that first song came on when it did… ashton was just not funny.. also during the monologue it was kinda obvious in HD that he had work done to his face or something…
BTW the bald 4th vulture seemed to scare away the cameras. Guess unless youwere in zepplin or nirvana or sing you’re not in the band to the network.

  • Me says:

    Makin’ money.

JPJ’s diminshed line in Mind Eraser is fucking awesome.

  • Justin says:

I need to find a way to see these dudes since Coachella is not an option.

  • zoopster says:

For some reason, probably because it was way too loud for that shitty soundstage, TCV didnt sound all that great. You could tell it was loud, but the guitars were way low in the mix, Josh’s vocals were way out front and completely flat, no reverb, which made him sound weird. The only thing I could pick out consistently was the bass, which sounded good. They were clearly havin a good time, but the two songs they picked just didn’t have the Ooomph! of the album versions, and definitely didn’t compare to what they really sound like live. Was anyone else surprised they opened with Mind Eraser? I hope any newcomers weren’t put off by this performance, as it definitely could’ve sounded better. I don’t think SNL can do justice to this band,. Way too big of a sound. Hopefully ACL performance this Sat. will sound better. Not hatin’, just sayin’…….

  • zoopster says:

Upon reflection, and after watching these clips and re-watching my taped version, I guess the sound wasn’t as bad as I originally thought. Musta been my TV. Never mind my earlier bitching……. And now that I think about it, playing mind eraser first was a pretty ballsy move.

JPJ always looks like he’s having a grand old time. A little dance party for one.

You’re forgiven, Zoop. Saved me the trouble of arguing with you.

  • zoopster says:

lol :) Thank you dharma, you are most gracious. Though I always enjoy friendly discourse on musical topics, I have seen the error of my ways on this one……backpedalling all the way. I guess there were many factors involved in my being less than impressed first time around. It was late, my tv set sucks, too much/not enough good drugs, dog ate my homework……..

  • zoopster says:

BTW did anyone catch the skit w/dave playing drums in a punk-band wedding reception reunion toward the end of the show? That shit was funny. He was wearin a ben franklin lookin wig and cracked a couple of cheesy jokes. Plus he had this funny ass look on his face and was still wearin the wig when they came back from commercial for the end when everybody comes back on stage……he cracks me up. probably the only funny part of the whole show.

I also thought it was cool they included Alain in the pic of the band they used in the bumper right before they came on, even if they didn’t give hime much air time during the performance. I know technically he’s not a vulture but he’s crucial to their live sound and he’s playin his ass off.

  • zoopster says:

shit I totally forgot to mention the facework ashton had done! Good call porkspam. I thought I was just trippin……nose job or something, right?

  • tng/dharma69 says:

Definitely, without Alain…I really can’t see them pulling off the weight of their sound without him live. Too, too much guitar going on and he’s so technically gifted. Even though he’s not an official TCV, he’s family. And, yes it sounds cheesy and like something that only a girl would say, but to see/hear him play a 12-string is to know that angels exist.
