Robert Smith’s Advice Is Not Very Good

Buena Vista Records is set to release Almost Alice, the soundtrack album to Tim Burton’s new Alice in Wonderland 3D spectacle, on March 2nd. Let’s just say that if the soundtrack lineup is any indication of what the film’s going to be like, we may as well skip the entire damn thing.

The film itself looks like a hallucinogenic extravaganza of the highest regard, but you may have to hold your ears when you go, because unlike Karen O’s marvelous cauldron of sounds for the Where The Wild Things Are soundtrack, they’ve recruited one hell of a lame-ass collection of musicians for this one.

For the Almost Alice soundtrack compilation, The Cure’s Robert Smith recorded an updated version of Very Good Advice, a song from Disney’s 1951 Alice film. Smith may be a lipsticked emo-precursor God of the ’80s, but his cover of the song is mediocre at best.

You think that’s bad? Unfortunately, that’s just the tip. Ex-Fall Out Boy Pete Wentz and Mark Hoppus of Blink-182 collaborated on a song, and shameless Postal Service ripoff Jesus freak Owl City is contributing as well. Avril Lavigne’s utterly shiteous Alice (Underground) is the lead single, and new music from Shinedown, Metro Station, and All Time Low will be featured, because… well, why? Because Tim Burton has unbelievably shitty taste in music? Possibly.

Thankfully, Almost Alice will be one of two soundtracks for the film that are to be released on March 2nd. The second will feature the original score by Danny Elfman. Alice in Wonderland hits theaters three days later, on March 5th.
