Chino Moreno Reveals Details On New Deftones Album

By Fernando Scoczynski, February 16th, 2010

In a recent interview with Spin, Chino Moreno has confirmed that the long-awaited sixth album from the Deftones is coming this May.

Bassist Chi Cheng remains in the hospital, only semi-conscious as Moreno reports, as he struggles to recover from a serious car accident. At the time of the accident in November of 2008, the band was in the process of recording the follow up to 2006’s Saturday Night Wrist, entitled Eros, a record that was described as “dark and experimental.”

Moreno explains that Eros will likely be released eventually, “when the time is right– hopefully when Chi is back on his feet.” But in the meantime, he felt he’d be unable to tour behind a record “with all these memories of Chi attached to it.”

The band has since hired former Quicksand bassist Sergio Vega. For the as-yet untitled forthcoming album, they started from scratch, writing from jams in a rehearsal room, a different approach from the one taken on the band’s previous albums. Chino told Spin that he is singing less about himself than he has in the past, focusing more on “visual images and no story telling.”

Moreno also confirmed the existence of a new side project with our buddy Shaun Lopez from Far, featuring guest vocals from Annie Hardy from Giant Drag. That project is entitled The Holy Ghost. While no further details were given in the interview, we’ll have our ears to the ground, and our eyes on the band’s MySpace and Twitter. Read the complete Spin interview here.

I really hope that Chi gets better enough to finish that Eros material. “Dark and experimental” definitely has a ring to it that I like, especially from the Deftones. Still, I’m interested to see what kind of influence this new bassist brings.

I don’t think anyone should be holding their breath for Chi to rejoin Deftones. Not to be insensitive, but it aint gonna happen. It’s one thing to pay respect and keep the flame lit for a brother in a bad way, but another entirely to imagine he’ll go from a year in a coma and severe trauma to killin’ it onstage.

Well, Syd never rejoined Pink Floyd either.

[...] Coming some 18 months after bassist Chi Cheng’s near fatal accident, the album hears Quicksand’s Sergio Vega filling in on bass and Nick Raskulinecz (Rush, Alice in Chains) serving as producer, and promises to be a “heavier, more insistent record that more accurately represented how they felt as a group.” For more insight, read singer Chino Moreno’s recent interview with Spin.com (via Antiquiet). White Pony is the best this band will ever do, regardless of who’s playing the bass lines.

Speaking of Sergio Vega I would love to see Quicksand do another album, but I guess I’ll settle for a Rival Schools reunion.

He told somewhere ( read the story on blabbermouth ) that it’ll be similiar to “White Pony” style of songwriting , not taking lyrics so personal etc.
