Music Television Is Not Quite Dead

As of this morning, Them Crooked Vultures’ full performance on Austin City Limits is available to watch in its entirety online. Which is cool, but you can also watch performances by Pearl Jam, The Avett Brothers and Heartless Bastards. So that’s a pretty strong bill for a free little private concert this Sunday afternoon.

You can find out when these specials (available in HD) are set to air on your local cable station through this handy ACL PBS schedule finder, or you can watch them on demand online:

Them Crooked Vultures
Pearl Jam
Avett Brothers / Heartless Bastards

And if you’re interested, there’s also an episode featuring K’Naan & Mos Def.

I wish Ed’s voice wasn’t so trashed during that set.

TCV looked/sounded great in HD. I would have rather heard Elephants instead of Mind Eraser/New Fang but it still was a good show.

I watched the TCV set, and really thought the sound was lacking. It was like the sound on an SNL performance. Am I crazy? Anyone else pick up on that?

    BTW, massive TCV fan.

Only watched a little of “Warsaw” so far, but it sounded pretty good. I am stoked to have this on tape. Yes, actual VHS baby! I will be watching this in my leisure many times………….. Thank you ACL for recognizing greatness!!!!

Furious, I think you are right, not that it sounds horrible, but I don’t think any sound studio or recording equipment can do justice to this band’s live sound and power. It must be witnessed live, first-hand to fully appreciate it. The sound is just too huge to be tamed and made to lay down on tape. But ACL did a damn good job of attempting to capture it.

  • Great post! I like the blog and love watching Supernatural on TV.
