We’re only a few hours into 2010, and the new decade’s already kickin’ out the awesome. Are you ready for this?
Soundgarden will reunite this year. That’s right, fucking Soundgarden. In dramatic fashion, frontman Chris Cornell confirmed the reunion on his Twitter account at the stroke of midnight EST.
“The 12 year break is over and school is back in session,” reads an announcement at Soundgarden’s official site (via Cornell’s Twitter). “To learn more, sign up now. Knights of the soundtable ride again!” So yeah, sign your asses up!
Sure, it took Cornell a shitty R&B-soaked album and a full fan revolt to make it happen, but let’s leave the ugly past behind us, shall we? I think it’s better that way.
Throughout 2009, however, there were some pretty solid signs that things were happening in the SG camp. First was the “Tadgarden” show last March in Seattle, when members Kim Thayil, Matt Cameron and Ben Shepherd rocked with guitarist Tom Morello and guest vocalist Tad Doyle.
This was followed by Chris Cornell’s statements to MusicRadar, when he said, “I’m never going to count anything out. I’ve always remained on great terms with everyone in the band. We’ve always been good friends. Seeing them reunite recently on YouTube? I thought that was terrific. It gave me a warm feeling. I wish I could have been there.”
Then there was the brief Temple Of The Dog reunion last October, when Cornell joined Pearl Jam on stage in Los Angeles for Hunger Strike. Chris’ vocals were spot-on and more powerful than I’d heard in years, but that wouldn’t have been enough to go on had I not personally witnessed the entire band huddled together backstage after the show.
No more specifics are available so far, but you can bet your ass we’re all over this nostalgia trip. The band is said to be “into the idea” of an appearance at the Coachella Music Festival this year, which would be fitting, given the annual festival’s propensity for massive reunion shows.
Hell yes.

Suweeeet!!!
i’m going to see the shit out of them.
Yeah Skwerl, but you said you’re gonna see the shit out of Hot Tub Time Machine too…we need a litmus test here… ;)
Litmus is my middle name. He’ll be right next to me, rocking the fuck out of this reunion whatever chance we get.
There is a Santa Claus!!!!
Awesome news, can’t wait to see tham live !
Not much of a surprise given how hard Chris Cornell’s solo career has been sucking for the past few years. It’s only natural for him to get back with his old band, try to make himself look ok in public again.
Yup, I’ll be there.
Save the sour grapes Fernando, they haven’t announced that they’re not touring Brazil just yet.
Uh oh.
While Pearl Jam is my “favorite” band, I generally refer to Soundgarden as the greatest American rock band of all time. I LOVE Soundgarden. They evolved on every album and I witnessed them kick ass live a couple of times.
They managed to have a long career with massive commercial success, and they broke up without making a bad album or any embarrassing disasters. Rare indeed. Now what? Do they do a shitty reunion tour to help sell a box set or b-sides collection? If so, that sucks. Or do they actually reform as a full-time band and create new albums? That COULD be cool, but who knows? It’s been over a decade, and people change musically. Just ask Timberland. The chances of them finally making a less-than-great album go way up if they actually make some more albums.
And let’s not forget the fact that Matt Cameron is the drummer for Pearl Jam. Eddie Vedder once stated that if Matt ever left Pearl Jam, there would be no more Pearl Jam. And if I had to choose, I’d rather keep Pearl Jam alive than roll the dice on a reunion trip, no matter how great Soundgarden was 15 years ago.
Good point, for sure, but I get the impression (especially from the full band’s presence at PJ’s 3rd LA show this year) that one won’t be sacrificed for the other. Pearl Jam’s due for some downtime, so an SG tour/album wouldn’t have to be at the expense of PJ’s existence.
Like I care where he’s going to tour.
I don’t know how it will end up. Is it cash grab? Maybe… but FNM reunion was great no matter if they release new album or not, they gave it all twice I saw them and looked to be happy together. But I would love to see FNM and Soundgarden release new albums.
Did vedder really say there would be no pj without cameron? that seems kind of extreme to me, im not even convinced yet that his style meshes with the band
Great news, some new tunes and tour would seal the deal. Really havent dug too much since SG besides the most underrated album out there (Euphoria Morning). First Audioslave record was hot too
theres been a lack of reviews recently, “journalists”
And? We have lives and families. When something good breaks, we’ll be on it. Until then, go be a douche somewhere else.
Johnny Twobyfour’s picture seems to be an accurate representation of his personality.
Euphoria Morning is one of my desert island disks and the one truly great thing to have come from Soundgarden’s demise. And yeah, I don’t think that anyone has anything to worry about re: Cameron & PJ; that’s solid. Ved has his time for a side project, Cameron will get his…even though A SG tour wi going to qualify as something more than a side project considering the immense draw that it’ll be. As long as the guy can handle the extra time on the road and remember how to play “My Wave”.
That is the most awesome news ever! Like FNM, i missed em first time round and now i have a second chance, which i will take the shit out of!
[...] bietet das neue Jahr wohl eine weitere Interessante Reunion: Soundgarden. Zumindest berichtet das Antiquiet und verweist auf eine (wohl neue) Soundgarden-Website mit dem Untertitel: „The 12 Year [...]
Well, if will put some brains again on Chris Cornell it’ll be a worth try :P
Best music news of the decade. For Kim and Ben and Matt to be on board with this despite or in spite of Cornell’s recent musical “ambitions,” they must truly have the utmost confidence that SG can rock again. I’m sure they must also want to come storming out of the gate and show everyone from the Dead Weather to The Stone Temple Pilots how it’s done.
We are not worthy.
Sadly this doesn’t surprise me at all. Maybe it’s awesome news for some real fans (not like me) but what would have been reeeeally cool news is if no one announced anything, just post some rad shit (like good new music) out there and get on with it. Really, nothing besides good tunes seems to move me these days. That’s the way it SHOULD be, or not? Thanks for the heads-up though.
about the lack of reviews the above guy mentions, honestly has anything even really important come out in the last couple of weeks besides christmas comps and nonsense?
Yeah but anyway it is blog, great one for sure, but it is not source of income so how anyone demand reviews ?
God I hate the word ‘blog’. Next to ‘lol’ it’s probably my most-despised intarnugs term.
If it insults you anyway, I’m sorry . never meant to.
ha not at all man, it’s good. we are what we are. hopefully the upcoming redesign will be a bit of a graduation from that term.
awesome awesome awesome its almost like a rebirth of grunge. first alice in chains, stp, now soundgarden. finally music gets a kick in the backside. i miss the 90’s and all its great music not the cookie cutter emo and 80’s style rock. thank the rock gods. kurt and layne are smiling
yeah that’s great that those bands keep coming back 2010 will be great year : 1. Soundgarden 2. Glenn Hughes forms supergroup with Joe Bonamassa ( Geez that will be a blast ) 3.Guns N’ Roses giving 3 and 1/2 hours shows 4. new STP album 5. Keith Richards writing music with Jack White. 6. Rolling Stones new CD to be produced by Jack. 7. New Dead Weather album 8. Ozzy, Rob Zombie, Airbourne return with new albums.
Peter…you aren’t selling me on 2010 haha.
.
I’m hopeful for new Arcade Fire, Dr. Dre, STP…and hopefully a couple awesome festivals.
.
Coachella should be good this year…since Soundgarden will likely reunite for it.
Yeah, I’ve got a completely random hunch that the new STP will kick ass. Guess we’ll see.
Pearl Jam can live without Matt Cameron. They can get Jack Irons, or maybe even…Dave Grohl…
That’s unlikely. Jack Irons can’t handle the pressure, Dave Grohl’s got more than enough on his plate, and Vedder’s “drummer problem” that persisted through the majority of the band’s career was solved with Cameron. It’s clear how much he’s taken with the drummer’s contributions. It would take a lot of wind out of Vedder’s sails to lose Cameron permanently. They’d go on, but I think it would be the end of the marathon PJ tours.
Yeah I agree but there are many awesome drummers who can tour – Brain, Josh Freese are free if I remember well.
Brain left GNR cause he had a kid and wanted to raise him. Similar situation with freese leaving NIN, I believe. Wanted to get a family going. Dave Grohl (as somebody mentioned), while a great guy and drummer, is not near the technical level of Matt when it comes to drums. Dave’s more bonham to Matts’ terry bozzio, or neil peart. Maybe PJ could get Matt Chamberlain to fill in again.
Am I the only one that’s not excited til you hear something>>> I guess….
Firstly Brian didn’t leave Guns N’ Roses, he just couldn’t tour but he will work with them in studia. He didn’t tour in late 2006/2007 because of kid(now we have 2010) and Pearl Jam won’t be touring forever they have summer Europe tour and that’s all so that would be like max 20 shows. So he would be awesome pick, guy is magic on drums and would handle all that stuff with ease.
Didn’t know about Josh having kid thanks for info, but still not so many shows so it could work
i think a dave krusen revival should be in order. the drumming on 10 is pretty great imo
