Stepping Into Medicine County With Holly Golightly

Holly Golightly is a British singer-songwriter who’s seen nearly two decades in the business, beginning in 1991 as part of Billy Childish’s girl-group project Thee Headcoats. You should know her by now, and if radio had any soul at all (or Jack White had his way), you would.

Miss Golightly (gub’mint name: Holly Golightly Smith) has honed her skills and paid her dues with a prolific catalogue ranging from punky garage-pop to rockabilly country blues. She always seems to have a knack for rocking just outside the limelight. 2004’s Slowly But Surely was lined up for a some solid exposure, arriving soon after her appearance on the White Stripes’ It’s True That We Love One Another from their smash Elephant album. The wave of attention never quite rose as high as it should’ve, however (Brendan Benson can empathize), despite a devoted commitment to touring and recording.

Since 2007, she’s performed with The Brokeoffs, aka Lawyer Dave, a self-described “goddamn Texan” who serves as a one-man backing band for Holly. The duo’s recently-released Dirty Don’t Hurt was recorded at a small analog studio in Spain, and showcases the duo’s ever-deepening chemistry and formidable abilities.

Golightly’s nineteenth new album, Medicine County, is due this year, and we’ve got the album’s first track on tap for you. Recorded in an abandoned church, Medicine County features eight original songs and four traditional numbers, including Blood On The Saddle and Jack O’Diamonds.
