A Four-Way Aging Metal Utopia

By Johnny Firecloud
Tuesday, December 15, 2009

Did you hear that high-pitched squeal? That was the sound of millions of metalheads, collectively shrieking like little girls at the news that their wildest heavy metal fantasies have just come true.

After several months of speculation and anticipatory mullet-grooming, it’s been confirmed that Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax will play on the same stage in the same night for the first time in history. Satan’s bowels exploded at the news, showering the globe with wretched metal bile and spike-studded leather bracelets. Revel in it.

sonispol

“It’s about fucking time this happened,” says Slayer’s Kerry King, “and about time the fans finally get what they want. This is fucking awesome.”

On June 16, 2010, the four legendary bands will take the stage at Bemowo Airport, Poland, to make our aging metal dreams come true alongside Mastodon and Behemoth. Yep, fucking Poland. They couldn’t have it here in America, where they’re all from, where they defined and gave direction to the metal aggression tendencies of millions of grimy kids in the Reagan era. To rub it in, a second Big Four appearance is planned for Sonisphere Czech Republic three days later, with more shows to be announced. Fuckers.

Lars Ulrich of Metallica weighed in on the historic announcement: “Who would have thought that more than 25 years after its inception, thrash metal’s big 4 would not only still be around and more popular than ever, but will now play together for the first time…what a mindfuck! Bring it on!”

That’s all fine and good, but why couldn’t these guys get their shit together fifteen years ago, when they weren’t rounding the corner of irrelevance and self-parody? These are all ’80s acts we’re talking about, every single one of them far past their prime fighting age (and shape). I mean hell, we’ll take what we can get, and it’s likely the only way that troglodyte Jersey headbangers will ever see the other side of the Atlantic, but still. (By the way, if you’re up for the trip, tickets are available from Sonispherefestivals.com)

Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian threw his thirty-four cents in as well:

“People have been talking about these four bands playing together since 1984. That’s twenty-six years of expectation!! And the thing is, I believe not only will we live up to the expectations, we will shatter them! No other four bands as influential as the four of us have ever done this. Imagine if The Beatles, Stones, the Who and Zeppelin had done shows? Or Sabbath, Priest, Maiden, Motorhead? Well, I may be getting into some rarified air here but as a fan, that’s how big I feel this is.”

Dave Mustaine commented too, but to hell with him. I think this calls for some Polish jokes.

    Scary fuckin picture.

I was actually psyched until I saw this was gonna be in Poland. WTF?

  • [...] came hope. Then came doubt. Now comes reality. As Antiquiet and Billboard report, heavy metal’s Big Four — Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax [...]

  • Justin says:

Maybe if the US had not turned their backs on Anthrax/Megadave during the 1990’s they would play here?

Perhaps the big four fear they can’t compete w/ Kevin Lyman?

Perhaps they will add US dates?

Regardless, cool they are all touring together.

  • zoopster says:

Maybe you are right. Punishment for not buying such instant classics as Risk, Youthanasia, and Stomp 442. Hopefully U.S. tour dates are coming.

So is it gonna be the new guy, Bush or Belladonna on vocals for Anthrax, I wonder?

They should get Lyman to promote a “Clash of the Titans 2″ over here……

  • Spinett says:

    Poland is awesome, FUCK OFF!
Personally, I’d prefer Mastodon alone, and the tickets are quite fucking expensive…

  • zoopster says:

Not saying anything bad about Poland. I’m sure it’s lovely country.I would like to visit there at some point…nothing wrong with Poland. Just lamenting the fact that this awesome show is, so far, gonna be in Europe only.

As good as Mastodon are, though, the point of this whole show is about the 4 Thrash legends…..you can see Mastodon alone any time.

  • Justin says:

Let’s not forget Load/Re-Load/St. Anger (granted Metallica has never really lost fans/ticket sales like Megadave/Scotthrax) and of course Diabolus in Musica was Slayer’s BEST album during the 1990’s.

  • Justin says:

PS – I think Bush is once again doing vocals with Anthrax.

  • nevetsrush says:

ummm…I guess I will just go and see Elton John, Barry Manillow, Neil Diamond, and Michael Bolton with a nice picnic lunch and wine at the Hollywood Bowl instead of going to Poland these guys…

BTW – might be obvious here, but any word on whether it will be recorded for a DVD/Blueray release?

Really…come on guys! Poland??? Who is the promoter?

    Ok…maybe play Leeds or something…

  • Spinett says:

No, seriously Poland is a great place to play a concert in, if you wanna see it come, otherwise fuck off, we didn’t piss into your cornflakes.

  • Peter says:

Yeah, I’ve already got tickets, awesome time to be in Poland during that time, for the first time BIG FOUR + Mastadon + Behemoth that’s one awesome deal. And tickets are not expensive come on – 40Euro, 65$. And 2 weeks later there is huge festival in Gdynia – Pearl Jam is headling first of 4 days , and Guns N’ Roses is heavly rumoured to be headling one of remaining dates ( and after that 34 songs set in Osaka Japan GN’R would be huge, 34 fuckin’ songs one night and Gn’R songs played were average 5 minutes long, that’s what I call a good show )

And yeah both Alice in Chains, U2, Faith No More were owestruck by polish crows (Guns N’ Roses in 2006 asd well first time I’ve heard Axl speaking directly about crowd “That’s a great, great Crowd”) in 2009 citing shows in Poland as the best shows of their tours.

  • Ricardo says:

It’s funny how americans get pissed about it, but still can see many shows and tours other countrys can only dream of.

so quit whining and be patient, pussies.

  • Piotr_of_Poland says:

THIS IS GOOD FOR YOU POOR AMERICANS!!! You will save some money :)… recently you can not give the world anything but WAR, CRISIS and OBESITY. Get a big mac and STFU. This is where this awesome concert will take place – POLAND !!!!!

  • Kelli St. Claire says:

Piotr_of_Poland ,I live in Poland right now, but your post is disgrace. How could you wish other people bad? And speak about Their country without any kind of respect. Such hateful opinions should be banned. Go Fuck Yourself. Poland is great country with great audience at shows so I know why many bands love to come to Poland and give their best shows but people like you only ruin good opinion aobut that country, Go and Hide in the Hole you came from !

  • JanPL says:

I wouldn’t be so happy about it, Piotr. If festival becomes success, the same shit will be repeated many times in America. No reason to feel exclusive.

BTW I didn’t expect this news would bring such negative feedback towards us, some comments are brilliant ;)

  • JanPL says:

“Such hateful opinions should be banned. Go Fuck Yourself.”
    lol

  • Conrad, UK says:

Music knows no borders and nothing should contain it. So many disgraceful opinions, so much hatred. It’s not what music is about for crying out loud!

  • Bredfan says:

Now I’ll piss you off, I know..Have tickets already, and despite of the whole bullshit comments, you are most welcome to come over. It’s not that fucking far, though I can imagine it may be a Life trip for West Coast headbangers! I’m pretty sure the show will continue in Northern America… and maybe even in its “worse part”…Canada, where polar bears walk the streets.
    Cheers!

  • Darek says:

back off from Poland, You (…) oh, no, that’s not the level I represent. but, I invite you to Poland. you have the opportunity for the first time in your life to leave the borders of your country. and learn a little geography…

  • Damn kids, no need to start an international pissing contest. Besides, I’m half Polish to begin with – we’re just jealous is all. “Have the opportunity for the first time in your life to leave the borders of your country.” Cute.

  • Skwerl says:

yeah, you goofballs can save the america bashing for one of the hipster blogs. we’ve covered shows outside of the us, and we’ve talked a lot about how much more genuinely appreciative european and south american audiences generally are, especially compared to nyc and la audiences that sit around talking and texting while magic happens onstage in small clubs. we get it. we’re spoiled, and have got no right to bitch. doesn’t mean some of us won’t still gripe that we can’t make it to sonisphere. we’re addicts, man.
as for the war, crisis and obesity… yeah yeah. america’s a big place. things got out of hand with some cowboy wackjobs for a bit, but bitching about it here is like bitching about the holocaust at wienerschnitzel. sorry for the inconveniences, but we voted for the other dudes.

  • Kelli St. Claire says:

+1 Skwerl, I’m Polish but bashing America just for sake of bashing is stupid, especially when it is not music/art connected but some political issues, it is not a political site so leave it outside.

  • Allright says:

Wats up pussys??? I\m from Poland, I live in Poland, I’m a Metalhead. And, trust me, if i’ll meet anyone from USA, Canada or Uk on this concert, trust me, me an my one hundred and thousand fucking friends kick your asses. And if you little racist asses will come to this festival, must have insurance and place in hospital. For “Yep, fucking Poland.” and “Fuckers”, i personaly will pull all of your teeth… Eat Shit And Die Fuckers

  • Skwerl says:

…brought to you by the polish tourism board.

  • Justin says:

For years, I never understood Polish jokes (great Polish inventions – double decker outhouse and or a solar powered flashlight), but after reading the comments, well they still don’t make much sense. However, I do find it funny the amount of sand Polish headbangers have in their collective vagina.

  • Radek.pl says:

    All bands from U.S?
    Behemoth is polish band…lol.
I would laugh…but it’s not nice to laugh at mentally disabled.
This article shows how you americans can be self-centered, primitive idiots and racists…just shut your mouths with some hamburgeres and let the others live.

Probably you don’t even know where Poland is (for sure it’s not in EASTERN Europe…)

  • haha you Polock. I was referring to the Big Four when I said they’re “all” from America. And how do meat patties keep working their way into these “you fat primitive American racists” attacks? By the way, we could give a shit about Behemoth. They’re openers. But seriously, leave our delicious hamburgers out of this.

  • zoopster says:

    wow. amazed at the hate.

@Allright, to quote the words of the immortal Toki Wartooth…….”Are you a dentist?”

If not, please don’t pull my teeth if I ever come to your country.

I understand you guys are probably mad because you think we have everything, and so you think, “why are those stupid Americans bitching about one metal show?”

Also it seems like you like thinking that you are somehow getting something that we can’t, and that makes you feel good.
    Whatever.
The truth is that generally, metal festivals don’t happen in the U.S. very often. Why? I don’t know. Seems that some metal bands may have a preconceived notion that somehow crowds in other countries are cooler or more into it than their American brethren. I say Bullshit to that. We are just as passionate about our metal. And if they do happen to have one in America, it usually sucks, with too many lame bands and not enough true kickass headliners.
Additionally, a shit load of truly cool metal festivals happen all the fucking time in Europe. So we bitch. Because we want to see this great lineup, and don’t know whether it’ll hit our coast. We bitch because Poland is a long way away, not because it sucks.

No one ever said anything about Poland sucking or being a shitty country. Tired of you fucked up backassed Euroshits saying Fuck Off to people.

    Hamburgeres. Dan Quayle style.

  • zoopster says:

Johnny,I think that Europeans secretly crave and are obsessed by our glorious burgers and want to control the meat patty market for themselves alone.

They are jealous of our burger dominance and that is why they are so bitter.

This is what we, as God-fearing Amuricans, should be worried about, not some silly metal show.

So, up yours, Europe. Keep your precious metal festival and keep your hands off our burgers!

  • Hey, we might have cornered the market on burgers, but nothing tastes as good as a nice ribeye from India.

  • zoopster says:

    mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm…………sacred cow……..

  • ksocha says:

Hahaha! Fuckin’ Johnny Firecloud is crying now ’cause Americans have been just fucked in their fat asses. Screw you dear Johnny.
    Worst wishes,
    ksocha

  • Donchu go talkin bout my hamburgers.

  • Skwerl says:

man, these polish folks are acting exactly like the douchebag americans they seem to think we are. i think i’ll put poland next to new jersey on the list of places i don’t need to go to.

  • Kelli St. Claire says:

Yeah Skwerl is right, I’m ashamed how my compatriots behave, there is nothing more to say. It’s bad because I really like that site and seeing how band of idiots are making fool not only of themselves but also country they represent is really sad.
Especially considering that majority people who visted Poland really love it and love Polish people , but such guys like those posters are douchebags nothing more. They just post because they feel inferior and when sometimes good happens to them they try to turn that into something negative on others. Shame…

  • Skwerl says:

johnny, lets go to poland and get kelli here a beer.

  • I’m for it. No batshit insane adventures planned for ‘10 yet, so why not? Wonder if he’s ever tried Yuengling…

  • Kelli St. Claire says:

I haven’t tried it but is sounds crazy…, anyway If you want to make a crazy trip Poland is place to go, and there are great rock shows in the summer ( not only that Big Four thing but also Pearl Jam at really big and great 4-day festival). And girls are usually great.

But what is Yuengling ? Maybe I will find out I go back to CA in 5 weeks time :D

  • Kate_Warsaw says:

    Nice to read your…hm… discussion….
you’ll all change your opinions about Poland after the festival.
    Guaranted ;-).

  • Metalhead says:

You know… the biggest fun for me is that, you won’t have such a good concert in your country. We have just one big concert in Poland’s History – Monsters Of Rock in 1991. We deserve to have this concert. Ant admins of Antiquiet suck balls

  • Kelli St. Claire says:

Acutally Anitquiet guys are great, they have their opinions but respect other’s opnions, unlike most of other posters here and admins/posters on other sites.
How Poland deserve something and other countries not ? What a stupid point, I’m happy that in happens in Poland and it is good for country but from opnions here majority of those so called “fans” do not deserve it , no matter what country they are for. And it just happens in Warsaw not because Poland deserved anything.
I’m sure that majority of guys who will make it to the concerts will change opnion about Poland, because people are great here and make awesome fans, but those guys behaving like fuckheads make very bad impression.

  • zoopster says:

I see Slayer/Megadeth/Testament added some tour dates here in the states, which is good news, but it doesn’t appear that Anthrax is on the bill……….
