Meet Johnny’s Grandpa Joe

This morning, Johnny Firecloud took off for Nashville for his tour of Third Man Records, Jack White’s magical music factory, golden ticket in hand. We had held a sort of open-mic night contest for his +1, as I’m unable to attend.

Golden Ticket Winner

Before he left, he dropped the winning submission in my lap, which came from Sami Jarroush of the not widely known but very Antiquiet-approved Rock It Out! Blog.

I hadn’t personally seen any of the submissions for the contest, and this was my first time seeing the winning entry that I had only heard about. Johnny and I agreed on the nature of the contest, but the judgment was left entirely up to him.

While I can’t compare Sami’s entry to any of the others (out of which Johnny says there were many good contenders), as I sit here smirking wide at Sami’s submission, I can tell you he delivered exactly what we had decided would deserve the prize. We weren’t looking for technical skill, or originality, or any of the things you’re better off being born with. We were looking for spontaneity, heart, and bravery. Jack White’s a ridiculously talented guitarist, but it’s those three things that make him a genius.

Sami delivered all three in what appeared to be a single barely premeditated take. He wasn’t showing off, he was just communicating with music. He nailed it. Congrats and thank you, Sami.

Johnny and Sami will be in Nashville through Friday, and I’m sure they’ll both have lots to share once they’re back. We’re looking forward to hearing how all the other kids were killed.

In the meantime, I guess you’ll be hearing a lot from me for a couple days as I try and hold down the fort around here.

Have fun. Check out Grimey’s record store while you are there. Best one in the country in my opinion and just a few blocks away from Jack’s magic music empire.

I think Johnny will try one of the everlasting-solo-guitars and die from exhaustion because his fingers won’t ever stop moving.

  • zoopster says:

what i want to know is will there be oompa-loompas?

  • Leann says:

A most excellent entry and a worthy opponent, Sami.
Still, jealousy oozes from every pore of my being.
I bow to you, you lucky son of a ball and a biscuit, my brotha. I bet you’re bursting at the seams, I would be!
I wonder where my entry lies…somewhere between “one of the good contenders”, and “OMG, how humiliating for you!” hehehe! Please, I’d rather not know!

  • Funny you mention that, Trucks… TMR 006 of I Cut Like A Buffalo is sitting in my little party-goodies bag as we speak. Just got back… a gobstopper of a time if there ever was one. Many more details to come…. including how I’m now on vinyl with Jack White.

  • zoopster says:

that is totally cool, to be on vinyl with jack white. jealous.

  • trucks says:

So Johnny, is it for sale?

  • trucks says:

And I take it you guys all got 3″ Denial Twists? What else? Must know more.

  • trucks says:

Johnny, can you confirm or deny this?

TMR 016 – Under Great White Northern Lights soundtrack?
    TMR 018 – Meg White

  • trucks says:

TMR 015 – Broken Boy Soldiers?

  • I’d say you’re not far off… they were doing a quality check on the UGWNL soundtrack as Jack walked us around Third Man. Blasting from all sides. Sounds awesome.

  • Kevin Lee says:

trucks is freaking out. I love it.

  • Kevin Lee says:

I was off Thursday and live 30 minutes away from Nashville. If I was smart I would have drove up there to see if I could meet Jack on his way in/out.

  • trucks says:

    @ Kevin Lee:

Someone from the Vault got to go on the tour apparently because they drove down and asked/begged. Apparently Jack let him and a friend in but he wasn’t able to take part in the recording Johnny mentioned that will be only for those who went.

I have way too much time on my hands.

  • Leann says:

Ok, I’m dieing. What happened??? Jack is such a gentleman, what did he have planned for you guys? Did he feed you? If so, what did you eat? What kind of goodies were in the goodie bags? Did you get to ride in the sidewards and backwards Jackavator? Who else was there, as in The Dead Weather? What? Where? Why? How? Huh? Huh? Huh?
