Pearl Jam Returns

The first single from Pearl Jam’s long-awaited ninth studio album Backspacer arrived at midnight. It’s called The Fixer, and it’s a promising first impression of the band’s reunion with producer Brendan O’Brien.

Pearl Jam The Fixer

Head over to Pearl Jam’s MySpace page to hear the song, which will undoubtedly spread like wildfire in the coming hours. Upbeat and pop-optimistic, Vedder runs down a list of hypothetical dilemmas and what he’d do to remedy the situation: When something’s dark, let me shed a little light on it/ When something’s cold, let me put a little fire on it, and so on. The buoyancy of love’s devotion shines through the simply-stated lyrics – a refreshing change of direction from a band who’s last lead-in single was Worldwide Suicide.

Whatever the case, if you’d have told me 15 years ago that Vedder would be singing like a hopeless, happy romantic I’d have laughed in your face. But the band has aged as gracefully as any can with nearly 20 years in the limelight, and The Fixer is an exciting piece to the puzzle we’ll have waiting for us on Sept. 20 when Backspacer arrives. And not just at Target, either.

Great upbeat way to start my morning. Can’t wait to hear it live. And I will at least 4 times ;)

I’m a huge fan… and this will not be my favorite off the upcoming album. It’s catchy, yeah. But it’s not my cup of tea. (Of course, neither was “Ten” when that came out…)

To be honest, I’m not that impressed with this first single. It sounds bland and boring, some of the guitar parts remind of the song “Evolution” by Pearl Jam(not a bad thing). But I just don’t think this song stands out very well. Just my two cents, maybe I just expect better from Pearl Jam.
