Well kinda not really. It’s all robots doing the sex, drugs and violence. That’s okay right?
The duo of Squeak E. Clean (Sam Spiegel, brother of director Spike Jonze) and DJ Zegon (pro skater Ze Gonzales), also known as N.A.S.A., have unveiled a new video. It’s the latest of several for tracks from their album The Spirit Of Apollo, and not the first one cool enough to get some love from Antiquiet. The new video, for A Volta, has been described as “an 8-bit narco nightmare.”
It’s quite unlike anything I’ve seen before. It plays out like a very foreign Scarface, set in The Matrix. It feels like Aeon Flux (the TV series, not the shitty Charlize Theron vehicle). And it looks like… Legos? Legos gone very, very bad.
Directed by a man named Logan, the video prominently features art by the Coachella Valley based pair of artists called The Date Farmers. Logan had this to say about the approach:
“The camera movements had to be repetitive and mechanical to illicit the sense of anxiety and paranoia. I wanted it to have a Q*bert feel with a bit of Street Of Crocodiles mixed in, a video game with a stop-motion feel which seemed right for the track. The subtitles were designed to be part of the stimulation overload… like watching Santo movies on VHS late at night.”
But we’re just scratching the surface of the geek fodder available for this amazing clip. It was nerd mecca Boing Boing that unveiled the video yesterday, and it was accompanied not only by the interview from which the above quote was taken, but also a short, witty, making-of mockumentary, as well as a video introduction to the work of The Date Farmers. Go ahead and dive down the rabbit hole if you dare.
