The history-changing headline might actually be true. In a new book entitled Rock Roadie, an aide to Jimi Hendrix’ manager Michael Jeffrey claims that an intoxicated Jeffrey confessed to killing Hendrix, in order to cash in on a £1.2 million insurance policy, while paranoid that Hendrix was planning to fire him.
As The Independent reports, James “Tappy” Wright explains in his new book that Jeffrey confessed to the crime in 1971: “…We went ’round to Monika’s hotel room, got a handful of pills and stuffed them into his mouth,” Jeffrey is quoted as saying. “Then [we] poured a few bottles of red wine deep into his windpipe… I had to do it. Jimi was worth much more to me dead than alive. That son of a bitch was going to leave me. If I lost him, I’d lose everything.”
Yeah, a drunken confession alone doesn’t necessarily make the story any more believable than the ‘Courtney killed Kurt’ one, or the one where Tupac is still totally alive, hitting clubs up in New Orleans.
But apparently, John Bannister, the doctor who dealt with Hendrix at the hospital, has always been convinced that Hendrix had drowned in wine, with very little alcohol in his bloodstream. “I recall vividly the very large amounts of red wine that oozed from his stomach and his lungs,” Bannister claimed in 1992. “And in my opinion there was no question that Jimi Hendrix had drowned.”
Michael Jeffrey died in a plane crash in 1973. His alleged accomplice, Monika Dannemann, committed suicide in 1996, amidst reports that she was due to be described in a book about the last days of Hendrix in a negative light.
I’m not a big fan of conspiracy theories, but the case for this one seems pretty damn strong.

Totally believable. Jeffrey was a skeevy bastard and stole millions from Hendrix. Wouldn’t put it past him to try and collect on a life insurance policy. And as far as I know, this is pretty recent news……
how fucked is it that someone thought 1.2 mil was enough money to take Jimi from the world?
You have to remember this was 1970 and 1.2 million would have been a serious amount of money back then, Jimi’s manager Mike Jeffrey was a ruthless bastard, he would have sold his own grandmother if he had to, he also owed alot of people an awful lot of money and faced with the choice of probably being killed himself for not being in a postion to pay people back as well as facing up to losing his highest earning star to another manager (Jimi was making moves to leave him) the motive certainly checks out. I now support the theory that Jimi didn’t die accidentally (although i believed to the contrary for a long time) and what changed my view was reading ‘Rock Roadie’ by James ‘Tappy’ Wright. If conspiracy theories exist this is one that i can actually find believable.
Damn, it’s too bad Gil Grissom just retired. But seriously, it’s bad enough he died. If this is true, it makes it that much more sad.

I don’t know if my entry was not successfully posted so I am re-entering. Sorry for any redundancy.
Jimi was brilliant. I saw him in Germany in January 1969. He has had a profound effect on my interest in music ever since. It is a tragedy he did so young. He did have excesses which may have been further exploited by those who could have slipped him bad acid before he died. A great book about him I got a year ago explosres the homicide angle and makes sense. Why is the roadie coming out with his now? Anyway, it would support the other author’s contention. He would have been unable to fend off any intruder intent on doing him harm.
I think Monika (who supposedly thought Jimi was going to marry her) was told by person, or persons, unknown to get lost for a while. Was that the manager? She apparently did look in on hendrix at different points in time but took no action. Eric Burdon also told her at some point in time to call for help. I am willing to bet she was appalled to see that Jimi was in that state and could not fathom what to do. Shock? Is that the way to show love for someone you hoped would soon marry you?!
Why did friends (including, at least Monika) bother to sanitize the place (flush drugs) instead of getting the ambulance earlier than they apparently did? Grisly.
Guilty thoughts may have led them down the paths they eventually followed….

The reason this didn’t come out before is because every mess up for lack of a better word doesn’t come out till 20 years after. Look up it and it’s true. Everything you hear is no longer the truth just wait for 20 years and then maybe just maybe you’ll get a better story or the truth out. Life policies aren’t new but I guess the police and detectives were paid to keep their mouths shut.
Umm, not to be a dick or anything, but Hendrix died in 1970. That’s actually 41 years ago, so, by your standards, TWICE the truth should have been out by now.
Jimi Hendrix was most likely killed by a CIA/COINTELPRO political assassination operation. If you follow the money Jeffery kept the money he stole from Jimi in some offshore Bahamian banks that CIA also kept some very sensitive funds in. Read Michael Collins Piper’s book ‘Final Judgment’ to understand the connection between the CIA and mob in those banks and how they were used to channel mob proceeds into CIA black ops bank accounts. CIA had a deal with organized crime that if they helped control communism CIA would look the other way. CIA then took a cut which ended up in those same Bahamian offshore banks that Jeffery kept Hendrix’s stolen money in.
I openly suspect Michael Jeffery was recruited straight out of MI-5 in order to participate in the British branch of this program. He ripped-off the Animals, before he ever heard of Hendrix, through the same banks. I suspect Jeffery was the go-between for this program and was tapping unsuspecting rock acts as a funding source for this CIA black ops program. That explains why Jeffery had no problem taking those acts over from the mob.
Jimi was murdered while he was in the process of sending his lawyers to investigate those Bahamian bank accounts. They were literally CIA’s most sensitive bank accounts and were their main funding source for their worst black operations. CIA used offshore accounts in order to prevent having to explain what they did with the money or where they got it from. Those monies could then be used to fund some very wicked anti-communist operations. CIA was not interested in having lawyers snooping around those banks. Jimi was murdered by classic CIA alcoholic waterboarding in combination with barbiturates shortly after he initiated a tracing of his money. The main Bahamian BCCI Bank was shut down a decade later when it was determined it was mostly a dirty money laundry. Wikipedia BCCI Bank if you don’t believe me.
Jeffery told Tappy Wright “I had to do it, I had no choice”. You bet your ass.
Interesting that two months after confessing to Wright Jeffery was called to Majorca to help fix an electrical problem at his nightclub. On the flight back to Britain his Iberia Airlines DC-9 collided with another commercial aircraft and crashed. All 68 on board were killed. It is my suggestion that after killing Hendrix by covert means giving Jeffery a heart attack or some other covert death would be too obvious. No one, however, would question a mid-air plane collision.
While Jeffery was drawn to Majorca French Air Traffic Controllers went on strike. They were then replaced with military controllers less familiar with the operation. It was during this time that Jeffery’s flight crashed. It is my direct suggestion that intel were the only ones capable of creating the nightclub electrical problem pretext, as well as getting the air traffic controllers to strike, and also steering two jets towards each other. If Jeffery died there would be no one to publicly connect him to those CIA banks or investigate his background once it was established the money was unaccountably gone. Perhaps this is why Jeffery confessed?
Jeffery’s charred and mangled body was identified by a Hendrix road crew member – either Stickells or Barret, I can’t recall. He identified Jeffery through his unique jewelry. And although he never saw the remains themselves they were photographed.
I’d also check out Monika Dannemann’s background because it is very possible she was used as an intel infiltrator. I suspect the super-strong sleeping tablets that ended up in Hendrix’s reach the night he died were swung in there by a subtle CIA black operation. And, ironically, very possibly one Jimi may have inadvertently funded himself.
