There was a time not very long ago when everyone on the internet besides us was talking about Susan Boyle, the not at all attractive talent show contestant that surprised a ton of apparently diabolically judgmental people by having a pretty voice.
Of course, it would later be brought to light that Boyle had been desperately trying to capture this audience for eons, ever since she was not exceptionally good looking nor exceptionally ugly. Her abilities hadn’t evolved much over the years, but the anti-makeover brought on by the aging process ironically provided her with a gimmick that empowered her to become more YouTube-famous than the Chocolate Rain dude, to the tune of 60 million views.
We could have been “those guys” and talked shit, but we just ignored it. We had way cooler stuff to talk about anyway, I’m sure.
But an artist I’ve always dug hit the nail on the head the other night, and I felt the need to say amen. Lily Allen started off by calling Boyle “overrated” on Twitter. When pressed, she elaborated: “I thought her timing was off, no control, and I don’t think she has an amazing voice.” I completely agree with that, almost as much as I agree with the following and final defense of her opinion: “Yes, she can sing, but it’s not about talent with her is it? She seems like a lovely lady but if it’s about talent, that Shaheen kid should win.”
Thank you Lily, for saying it.
