Chris Martin Should Really Go To More Shows
By Johnny Firecloud

After rightfully losing in all their categories for The Brit Awards last night, Coldplay headed over to play War Child charity’s star-studded 15th anniversary benefit (celebrating the release of War Child’s new album Heroes). They ran through a set highlighting the more memorable derivatives that made them kajillionaires before heading into what frontman Chris Martin personally dubbed “The best encore you’ve seen in your life.”
Take That frontman Gary Barlow then came out to sing Back For Good with the band, driving all the crumpety cameraphone-addled Brits in the audience crazy with a hearty dose of nineties boy band nostalgia. Naturally, nobody from this side of the pond knows who the hell Gary Barlow is, and even if we did there’s certainly no way to translate his appearance into something worth losing our shit over. Like Tila Tequila or Perez, some shit is just regional.
Once that little spectacle ended, The Killers returned to the stage (they’d played earlier in the night), and after frontman Brandon Flowers’ ohnohedi’int “We stole this song from Steve Vai, but don’t tell anybody” comment, launched into their color-by-numbers U2 ripoff hit All These Things That I’ve Done. And wouldn’cha know it, the shitpop shaman himself, Bono, bounced onstage to join in.
Here are two versions, because we love you twice as much as everyone else (actually the first has better sound; the second, better visuals).
This naturally made for a very strange gathering, being that Coldplay and The Killers have been more successful at ripping off U2 than any band in existence, but they handled it well, each taking ego-stroke turns on the mic.
Best encore ever? Sure, if spiced Xerox copies mixing with the original qualify as a supergroup in your book. But to the rest of us, it was just another case of the apples returning to the tree. Chris Martin should really look into checking out a few shows besides his own every once in a while. Maybe Gwyneth can show him the way- she all but dropped to her knees and blew Thom Yorke at the Grammys a couple weeks ago, so she’s clearly got some taste.

Hands up if you think Johnny Firecloud is a tosser
‘Millions Of People Worldwide Raises Their Hands’
@”The Game”: I hate to legitimize a stupid comment like that by even acknowledging it, but, dude, is this 2nd grade or what? As well as it being grammatically incorrect.
damn game, that was like the weakest burn i’ve ever seen on the internet.
Can’t really comment on the Coldplay thing cause I didn’t see it, and I know this is waaay off topic and I’m probably gonna get shit for this, but…..was anyone else as surprised as me that the Jonas brothers didn’t completely suck the other night on SNL? I mean, their songs aren’t the greatest, but the one brother can actually play guitar pretty good, they sing their own shit and they seemed genuinely passionate about what they were doing onstage. There. I said it. May God help me.
the disney artists can all sing and play instruments. it’s like this whole weird academy that works a bit differently than the bands designed in the boardroom by assembling no talent pretty faces with other people’s songs and a producer du jour.
not saying i’m a jb fan, but i for one am not going to chew you out for giving credit where it’s indeed due.
Ok one Coldplay comment… Is Chris Martin trying to steal the “Biggest Self-Absorbed Douchebag” award from Kanye or what? “Best encore…” What an ass, just for saying that, never mind how good or bad said encore may have been.
I was truly shocked that the JB performance was not bad, after I checked real hard to make sure they werent lip-synching. It got an amused “Huh.” out of me. Didn’t expect that.
Uh, I don’t know what SNL episode you people were watching, but what I saw was an embarrassment. They’re talented, good looking multi-instrumentalists, sure, but can’t sing worth a damn, and there’s zero true fire. There’s the difference between them and Hanson.
(and yeah, I said you people.)
You are definitely right, they can’t sing, at least judging from that performance, and that Stevie Wonder thing, that was just wrong. I can see now that I may have mistaken highly choreographed rockin’ out for passion. Disney magic put the whammy on my sensibilities for a second. While the magnitude of difference between them and Hanson is debatable, I get your point. They are certainly better than Ashley Simpson, though, but I guess that’s not saying much either. Sorry I hijacked the Coldplay thread. Didn’t mean to turn this into a Jonas Brothers discussion board lol
no, i’m sticking to my guns here- they can sing. are they truly inspired artists? perhaps not. do they rely heavily on production and choreography? of course, that’s a big selling point of the package that their audience buys into. but they’re not talentless. songwriting ability and inspiration trumps technical ability any day of the week, but coldplay thread or not, i’ve gotta give credit where it’s due haha.
Oh, leave Chris Martin alone. No, I’m not a fangirl, before you start on me. Gary Barlow is something of an icon here in England. Not to everyone, obviously, but to many. Besides, what artist wouldn’t tell their fans that they were about to see an amazing encore? Might not be so impressive to you, but it would be to the fans, wouldn’t it? Chris Martin is one of the most self-deprecating artists out there. Let him be.
